Things I’ve Done That I Wish I’d Thought Twice About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAIC chapter.

Breakups and heart breaks might not always go together but they are often unavoidable. When going through any of both emotions, I am usually struck pretty hard and have done some “dumb shit” that I honestly regret. Having done some “dumb shit” again the other day, I actually made a whole list. So here’s five things on my top list of things I’ve done that I wish I’d thought twice before I did, and a few words on those things that I wish I could go back in time to warn myself.

*In this article “I” refers to the current me, “you” refers to past me, not the reader (but feel free to relate).

#1 Stop talking about your ex or past relationship

You are heartbroken, I get it. But that doesn’t excuse you from all that non-stop whining about your ex who clearly doesn’t talk about you at all. STOP, like right this moment. I know how nice it is to have a pity party, but ultimately it will damage your dignity badly. The relationship has died. Stop crying over its rotten corpse and LET IT DIE.

#2 Binge eating your feelings away

It is understandable when you are going through a hard time, and once in a while indulging in some ice cream and chocolate does makes you feel better. BUT, when treating yourself became a sugar coat for binge eating behaviors, you better think twice. It is not worth destroying your physical body with a pint of chocolate chip mint ice cream every night to recover from a heartbreak.

#3 Binge drinking

I am not even gonna start on this. You are going to end up in so much trouble and embarrassment for yourself when you look back. How do I know? Because I’ve been through it too. Put that Jäger down, your body will thank you, so does mine.

#4 Stalking your ex

It is probably one of the most common habits that so many other people I know that have done. Not to mention your ex, it is already tempting enough to stalk random people on Facebook. No, keep your head up, keep walking.

#5 Making a scene when you run into your ex

Speaking of keeping your head up and walking. KEEP WALKING. Don’t do anything driven by your emotions. Maybe you want to go up for a conversation: maybe you want to show that you are doing better than them; maybe you are curious if they are doing well; maybe you want a conclusion; maybe you want to apologize. No matter what is driving you, think twice, you do not want to walk straight up to them and cross the boundaries which you obviously have with your exes.
