This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois State chapter.

I am currently taking a creative writing class at ISU. Our first unit was poetry, and at first I was terrified. I have never written a poem before, and it wasn’t really my thing. Now, I am writing poems left and right! I really enjoyed this unit, and thought I would share a few of my poems. Hope you guys like them!

Live

Live for the little things

Live for 5 a.m runs

Live for the sunset

Live for the first sip of coffee in the morning

Live for the moment when someone says they’re proud of you

Live for the car rides with your friends blaring music

Live for making someone smile

Live for others making you smile

Live for going to new restaurants

Live for traveling to unexpected places

Live for reading a damn good book

Live for writing things that matter

Live for the special moments you have with people you care about

Whatever you do,

just live.

Home

You don’t find a

home in a house,

you find it within people.

Reasons Why

I am the reason

why your lips curl daily,

your teeth shine for everyone,

and you feel like you’re on top of the world.

I am the reason why your coffee smells so fresh,

why you feel so loved every day,

and why you get up every morning

 to the waking sun hopeful.

My dear,

I don’t want to take all the credit,

but I, happiness,

am the reason why.

Winter

Walking down Madison Avenue

Snow falling lightly

Sparkling so bright

it’s blinding

Landing on your hair

Making a snow hat for you

Steaming hot coffee in one hand

A hand in the other

Paw prints on the sidewalks

Snow angels in the fields

Winter never go

You are too lively and beautiful

Prose Poem

As I write this, sitting in a coffee shop on a busy street, I think about all the good times we had: all the laughs, jokes, memories, sips of coffee. I remember looking into your blue eyes that took me back to when we were in Florida, running into the ocean fearless of what was underneath the water. The sun was burning our bodies, but it was a good kind of pain. We weren’t scared of anything. Maybe the manatee that waved to us as we were sitting at the edge of the dock, but we were never scared of the future, or even the past. I was never scared when I was with you. Now I look through the window at the blue sky, and snap back to reality. I never thought that you would ever slip out of my fingers, blending into the rest of the world.

Fly Away

Sometimes when I sit outside, I stare into the soul of the sky. The formation of the clouds amaze me, and then I see a pack of birds in a V shape flapping away their wings. I almost envy them. They get to fly to freedom and nothing can stop them.

Sometimes,

I just want to be a bird

so I can fly away from my

life for a second and get a

different perspective.

Why?

It can be so simple

Yet we make it so difficult.

This week

Waking up

to the fresh smell of coffee

The crisp scent of air

Stepping outside

nature entangling you

Nike shoes gently touching the street

Stress exiting your body

after completing your mental checklist

for the week

I know I have another week ahead

But I want to hang onto this one a little longer

and appreciate all the microscopic things that happened
