Black Girls Who Rock at SCAD Atlanta: Meet Elizabeth Keyes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCAD ATL chapter.

A #GIRLBOSS is someone who has big dreams and is the willingness to work hard and Elizabeth Keyes is the definition of a #GIRLBOSS and is black women who kick ass and looks great while doing it. She is a determined, empathetic, and kind-hearted, so I have the honor to sit down with her and discuss what drives her and what makes her such as empowered black girl boss. She is definitely a Black girl who rocks!

When did you first become interested in fashion?

I became interested in fashion since childhood. I thought that I wanted to become a dancer. I loved the costumes and the ability to express my emotions through dance.  I would play dress up and get my nails done. Sometimes I would sketch evening gowns and wedding dresses. I knew that I wanted to become a fashion designer when I was twelve years old. My desire is to create clothes that will build confidence in people. I want fashion to embrace all sizes and help consumers love themselves.

What is some current project that you’re working on?

Currently, I am a finalist for the National Black Arts Festival fashion forward competition. I made an evening gown entitled “Gatsby Girl.” I offer graphic design and styling services. I also have a few collaboration projects together. I sell paparazzi accessories which are nickel and lead-free $5 jewelry.

Who inspires you?

My mother is a huge inspiration to me because she has the strength to prevail regardless of circumstances. I always say that she has a solution to any problem. She has taught me how to be a leader, a learner and a doer. Always lead by example, always be open to learn and do the right thing. My mom has helped me gain confidence in myself and in my gifts.

What do you like about fashion? Where does your inspiration come from?

I love that fashion is broad and is necessary. There are so many aspects to design from making clothes to a fashion buyer and someone who can work in retail to sell the clothes. Fashion is necessary because if no one is designing clothes then no one will have clothes to wear. I get inspiration from fabric. I feel like the fabric communicates to me and says turn me into a dress or jacket. I love to travel and find interesting things like rocks, postal cards or even buttons for inspiration.

Where do you see yourself after graduating SCAD?

After SCAD, I see myself owning a clothing store and traveling the world. I believe that my mentorship program for girls will grow and that I will be able to help change lives. I want to start a scholarship fund to help students attend college.

What do you want to remember you for?

I want to be remembered for my faith. My mission in life is to please Jesus Christ. I enjoy helping people find their purpose in life. I believe that my faith creates opportunities that no one can give me. I am confident to know that miracles do happen. The reason why my brand is called Grace by Design is because I am under grace and I want to share it with others. I want to inspire others to do the right thing.  My life is special with Christ and my faith protects me. I want everyone to remember the light I shined on earth.

THANK YOU TO ELIZABETH!
