The Official 4-Step Guide to Layering, from Beginner to Advanced Level

With February coming to an end and March right around the corner, we’re now entering the time of year when every type of weather can make an appearance in a 24-hour period. You could be scraping frost off of your car windshield in the morning then end up sweating from the afternoon heat, all with a chance of occasional rain, snow, or wind. With how unpredictable the weather can be, it’s time to expect the unexpected, especially when it comes to our wardrobe.

Layering is an easy art to master, but it isn’t always intuitive. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, layering is a totally effective method to looking fab, no matter the occasion or environment. Lucky for you, we’ve put together a simple four-step guide for anyone who needs some fresh inspiration or has no idea where to start.

Base layers

These items are the core of your outfit and what you’ll be wearing when the temps start to rise. Examples of base layers are pants, skirts, camisoles, tank tops, t-shirts, and light sweaters. Base layers are to the fashion world what foundation and concealer is to the beauty community by setting the stage for the rest of the look.

Cardigans, blazers and jumpsuits

This is where we start to have a little more fun! Break out your favorite summer jumpsuit and layer it over a light sweater for a look that’s equal parts warm and cold weather. Adding a blazer or cardigan over your favorite band tee or camisole pulls the whole look together and can be easily taken on and off throughout the day. Flannels are another great addition, especially over simple camisoles or plain tees and sweaters.

Outerwear

This is a crucial step when the weather is especially finicky. Your outerwear could be anything from a wool longline coat to a light windbreaker, whatever will best protect you from the elements while making your outfit look 11/10. There aren’t any rules when it comes to matching colors or patterns between layers, so have fun with color-blocking, mixing patterns or staying within a color range. Whatever suits your fancy!

Accessories

Accessories are the finishing touches on any outfit and can include items like belts, hats, gloves, and scarves. This is even more of an excuse for you to pick up a fancy beret or don your favorite patterned scarf, even when it’s warmer out.

And there you have it, the art of layering summed up in four easy steps. Hopefully as the month goes on we’ll be able to shed some of the warmer layers, but for now, we’ll be looking pretty damn cute while wearing every part of our wardrobe. After all, who wouldn’t want an excuse to wear as many cute style pieces as possible?
