Raise your hand if you have a tendency to watch the same movies over and over again!

Raise your hand if you loooove LGBTQ movies!

I know my hand was raised for all three of these statements! But for those who may not have raised their hand at the third statement, I’m assuming it’s because you haven’t seen that many LGBTQ movies. Well fear no more, young Padawan, I am here to bring you the knowledge you’re missing! I made you a nice list of movies YOU HAVE TO SEE!

I know I’ve seen those movies like 4 times each (some, more than that…)

Now we all know what you’ll be doing this March break!

1. Imagine Me and You

This is the story of Luce and Rachel, who meet for the first time on Rachel’s wedding day where she’s marrying a guy named Hank. Sparks fly, and both their lives change.

This is my all-time favorite movie! Not because it’s LGBTQ, not because it’s about two women falling in love, but because it’s full of British Humour, good music and it’s altogether a feel-good comfort movie! I watch this movie at least every two months because it’s just the best! It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, and it always makes me feel better after a sucky day.

2. Call Me By Your Name

A beautifully made movie, which follows the book quite well up until the very end. This movie has a great narrative: it shows a different view of homosexuality in the 80s, one that is positive and uplifting! Also, the general aesthetic of each scene is just amazing!

Would not recommend watching with the kids you babysit if you don’t want to answer many questions about sex!

3. The Miseducation of Cameron Post

For once, they made a movie that is almost better than the book! I loved when I first read it, but I have to admit I found it a bit long in some places…The movie has all the important elements of the story, plus Chloë Grace Moretz plays Cameron and I am so happy about that!!!

Again, sex scenes…so not a movie for the whole family!

4. The Danish Girl

If you haven’t seen this movie yet…have you been living under a rock?? Again, movie based on a book, but let’s talk for a second about how beautiful this movie is!? The costumes, the art, the everything!!

If you have been living under a rock, this movie is the story of Lili, one of the first trans individual to attempt sex reassignment surgery, and her wife. The movie shows Lili’s transition, and how her relationship with her wife evolves throughout this transition.

5. Carol

Set in New York in 1950, this is the story of Carol, a married woman and mother, and Therese, a young aspiring photographer. They meet, they flirt, they fall in love…but at what cost…

One of my favorite movies too! Plus Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are incredible in this movie and I want to marry both of them, thank you very much!

6. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

When thinking of LGBTQ movies, Perks isn’t usually the first one that comes to mind. But I do put it in the LGBTQ movies category, even though the main character isn’t gay. Homosexuality, and the struggles that often come with being gay, don’t only affect people who are gay (or any letter of the LGBTQ acronym) but affect their family and friends too. In this movie, Charlie, who is dealing with his own trauma and issues, becomes friends with Patrick, a high school senior. Patrick introduces Charlie to a world of fun and discoveries, like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, drugs, parties, and a lot of good music!

7. Love, Simon

A cheesy adorable gay movie, super sweet and wholesome! This one you can watch with the kids you’re babysitting!

Simon, who is secretly gay, develops a relationship with another gay boy in his high school. But the thing is, Simon doesn’t know who this other gay kid is, he only knows him under the pseudonym Blue. But when someone posts his conversations with Blue online, Simon is forced to come out…even if he might lose his friends, and Blue, in the process.

Truly a great teen movie, and it so happens to be gay! Yay!

8. Almost Adults

This one, if you don’t know it, I won’t be mad. Almost Adults is a Canadian Movie that was FULLY funded on Kickstarter. Although it wasn’t presented in movie theaters, it made it’s way to Netflix due to extreme popularity on iTunes and in festivals.

This movie is the story of Cassie and Mackenzie, two best friends who are about to finish college and become real adults. But, even after being best friends for years, Mackenzie still hasn’t told Cassie that she’s gay…oops… After Cassie learns the news on Tumblr, the relationship between the two girls changes…

Love this one, very relatable with the whole college vibe!

9. C.R.A.Z.Y.

Now, if you’re not from Quebec, you probably don’t know this one. But let me tell you about Jean-Marc Vallée, the director of this movie…he is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! We have Jean-Marc Vallée to thank for Dallas Buyers Club, Sharp Objects and Big Little Lies.

This movie is a coming of age movie set in Quebec in the 60’s and 70’s. It follows the story of Zac, a bisexual boy who is the fourth of five boys. With great music and accurate Quebec representation, C.R.A.Z.Y. is an awesome movie, perfect for your spring break and to practice your French!

10. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

You’ve waited. You’ve speculated. You thought you couldn’t stand the antici…pation any longer!

But fear not, it is here! I could not have made a list of the best LGBTQ movies without adding the one and only: The Rocky Horror Picture Show! Now…if you are not familiar with this one, don’t tell me, because I might cry! This beautiful musical science-fiction horror-comedy gay-as-hell film was made in 1975, and let me tell you it made waves! This is the one film no one will ever forget, because even though the special effects were bad, the plot was meh.. and the horror part very kitsch, the dancing, the acting, and the songs make up for all of that!

If you haven’t seen it, please do that right now! You won’t regret it! And next time you see me, you’ll be able to sing all the songs with me!
