The Significance of the Jonas Brothers’ Return

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

Picture this – it’s a warm, summer night in 2008, and you’re about to reach the peak of your adolescence. The TV is set to Disney Channel (obviously), and after sweeping your side bangs to the side with dignity, you hear something magical emitting from the TV. A fiery guitar solo, the crash of the drums, and two distinct voices fill the air…what could this possibly be? You whip your head towards the TV, momentarily diverting your attention away from Webkinz, only to find the “When You Look Me In The Eyes” music video playing on your TV screen. At that moment, nothing was ever the same.

You, my friend, caught the Lovebug. The Jonas Brothers have stolen your heart, and there’s no turning back.

As comical as this may sound, the Jonas Brothers seriously became a milestone in the history of me and my friends’ lives. Their music became the background noise during a coming-of-age period for many: it could be heard while dancing around with friends at a sleepover, gliding through the headphones of a CD player on the school bus, and at the movies during their 3D Concert Experience. Regardless of the venue, we all knew that as soon as the Jonas Brothers started playing, it was going to be a good time.

After having a wildly successful career marked by creating four albums, completing nine concert tours, and starring in the Camp Rock movies as well as their own Disney Channel TV series, “Jonas”, the band split up to popular dismay in 2013. The years following the split were a time of exploration for the brothers. Kevin went on to marry his wife, Danielle, and star in a reality TV series called “Married To Jonas” on E! Network. Joe enlisted some new band members to create DNCE in 2015, achieving great success with the breakout hit, “Cake by the Ocean.” Nick went on to pursue a solo career, peaking with his album, “Last Year Was Complicated”, which made it to number two on the US Billboard 200 chart.

As successful as each of the brothers became throughout their hiatus, there was still a small hole left in the hearts of devout Jonas Brothers fans. After accepting our fate that we would probably have to wait until the Year 3000 before hearing a new Jonas Brothers song, a miracle happened. On March 1st, 2019, the Jonas Brothers gifted us with not only a new song called “Sucker,” but also an accompanying music video to replenish our barren souls! All of my friends, both old and new, rejoiced in the excitement of new content from our favorite childhood band. Now we can sleep at night knowing that there will definitely be more to come!

While some may scoff at Jonas Brothers fans, we can vehemently say that our excitement runs deeper than it may appear at the surface. For many, the Jonas Brothers reuniting reignites a sense of nostalgia that we all desperately need as we emerge into adulthood. Life can easily become too serious, and sometimes, the mere simplicity of hearing the voices of your favorite childhood band can serve as a gentle reminder to have more fun. The feeling of screaming the lyrics of your favorite songs with your friends in the car is unparalleled, and the Jonas Brothers remind us that this is a feeling we should be chasing after regularly. We only had to wait A Little Bit Longer, and now we’re fine.
