As a fan of the alternative pop/rock band Weezer, I find myself gravitating toward their music often. On Thursday, Jan. 24, I was chilling in my dorm, listening to nostalgic Weezer hits when I discovered that their new album, “Weezer (Teal Album)” was just released (which is available everywhere online). The album consists of 10 covers of hits from the 60s through the 90s. If you’re looking for the official playlist of #ThrowbackThursday, look no further.
The first song that I listened to from Weezer’s new album was their cover of Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”. The original version of the hit 80s song is fun to dance to but with the right amount of distortion, a popular technique with rock songs in the 21st century, Weezer gives it a touch-up that is fitting for the mood of the 2010s.
One of the best tracks on the “Weezer (Teal Album)” is Weezer’s cover of “No Scrubs” by TLC. The band didn’t change much in their cover, but again, adding a touch of electric guitar distortion in the bridge was what truly transformed the TLC hit. According to Rolling Stone magazine, TLC’s Chilli wants to “reach out to [Weezer] and make this performance happen!” In my opinion, The best cover on Weezer’s new album is of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me”. There have been many amazing covers of this famous song but Weezer’s take on it turns it into a soft rock ballad that is music to my ears. The cover is the last track on the album, perfectly completing the throwback set.
Whether you’re a fan of Weezer or classic hits from the 20th century, the “Weezer (Teal Album)” is definitely worth a listen. Though the songs covered on the album are already literal fire, Weezer adds their own touch to each, making the album extra special. Overall, Weezer serves us a blast-from-the-past that starts 2019 off with a bang.
