Indian cultures and traditions have made their way to the states over the years. Being in Iowa City for over seven months has given me a chance to see how these traditions are embraced here. March is here, which means yet another Indian festival approaching, Holi! Known as the “Festival of Colors,” Holi is usually celebrated in the months of February or March every year. Like many other festivals in India, Holi signifies victory of good over evil.
Unlike other festivals in India, on the day of Holi there are not many rituals to be performed, instead, it is a day to enjoy and to cover each other with gulaal (dry color powder)!
There is no reason you all shouldn’t be a part of such an ecstatic celebration. Here are three places to visit for all the people to enjoy Holi near Iowa City.
1. Hindu Temple and Cultural Center of Iowa, Madrid
If you are looking for more of a religious experience that comes with Holi, this is the place for you! The Hindu Temple and Cultural Center of Iowa is celebrating Holi on March 24. There is Holika Pooja, which is the religious ceremony that signifies Holi and color throwing at noon. There is a special lunch at 1 p.m. for all the visitors.
2. University of Iowa, Iowa City
YES! South Asian Student Alliance (SASA) and Indian Student Alliance (ISA) had an amazing Holi celebration last year that was absolutely free. So hold tight, there might be a similar celebration at your own university in late March or early April!
3. Navy Pier, Chicago
Who doesn’t like a quick trip to Chicago? Now you have one more reason to go there this month. There is a Holi celebration at Aon Grand Ballroom on March 23 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The celebration includes color throwing at Miller Lite Beer Garden with various music and dance concerts and special “Bombay Wraps.”
So get ready to get colored and to color all your friends!
