Social Media Do’s and Don’t’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rollins chapter.

I’ve never considered myself a social media expert by any means. I love scrolling through my feed and posting stupid, obnoxious pictures with my roomies as much as anyone- but recently it feels like the amount of cringe-worthy posts out there is reaching an all time high. Over the past couple of weeks, I have decided to create a running list of social media habits that make me just down right uncomfortable:

1. Don’t pose your friends too much

I love a good time as much as the next person, but if I hear you saying, “okay, go” while your bestie opens up a bottle of champagne, it kind of ruins the in-the-moment feel. Especially if you pan the camera around to your other friend and they are also snapchatting the same video… CRINGE!!!

2. Maybe don’t post up at the gyno

Now I care about the health of my friends very much, but to post pics on your snapchat of the gynecologist stirrups is kind of a private update. That’s one of those things I feel like shouldn’t have to be said… but I’ve seen it.

3. Consider limiting the number of shirtless pics of your boyfriend in bed… unless your boyfriend is Ryan Reynolds or something. 4. Don’t overdo the music posts.

People who put fire mixes on their story are clutch, as I can never seem to have enough bangers to add to my own playlists. But if you’re posting one sappy love song after another to show people how happy you are to be in love, or yet another Tame Impala song to prove to us how edgy and sad you are, consider getting a finsta to share those thoughts.

Everyone of course has their own social media preferences, but these are just a few of my personal pet peeves that I have seen over the past few weeks. Social media means something different to everyone, and for me it is a way to share some of my favorite memories and ideas with strangers, acquaintances, and friends. So whatever social media means to you, personalize it to make it resemble you… even if that means pics of you at the gyno. But hopefully it doesn’t.
