On June 8th at the Los Angeles Historic State Park, Yola Mezcal will bring us YOLA Festival – the biggest celebration of the arts, culture and music by today’s women. The 21+ festival will feature performances by Charli XCX, Cat Power and many more. Festival-goers will also be delighted by a rare acoustic set from Courtney Love & The Chateau Band.
YOLA Mezcal, the company behind YOLA Festival, is a mezcal brand located in Oaxaca, Mexico and founded by Yola Jimenez, Gina Correll Aglietti and Lykke Li. Run by women and bottled by women, the company is dedicated to “developing the economic autonomy of the women of Oaxaca by providing them with steady work and fair wages.” One of the founders, Lykke Li, is set to perform at the festival.
YOLA FEST comes during a time when music festivals still struggle to book female acts as much as male acts. Last year, over 100 festivals signed a global initiative called Keychange, vowing to address gender inequality in their lineups by 2022. There have also been numerous pushes by The Recording Academy, the organization behind The Grammys, to address the lack of women in music and fight for women’s recognition, as well as many other organizations. There has never been a better time to attend a festival of today’s women, especially with such a stacked roster of artists.
