I Tried Giving Up Ice Cream for Lent and Here’s How it Went

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fairfield chapter.

Ladies, we all know that summer is quickly approaching, and a lot of times Lent is used to give up things that are unhealthy for us. Though this can be a great motivator, that’s not what it’s about. It’s about choosing to give something up in sacrifice and taking on the 40-day period as a time to reflect. Until this year, I never really gave anything up for Lent, because in the past I was so busy or I would try for about a week and crack. This year I decided to give up ice cream, and here’s how it went.

Being a freshman in college and living off The Tully every night can be extremely tempting to get soft serve. I noticed that as the semester continued, I was getting ice cream at least 4 times a week, and it was causing a lot of other issues like bloating, fatigue, and sugar highs. So, like many others, I dove into the Lent theme and gave up ice cream. Honestly, it went really well! Quitting cold turkey wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be, and even as time went on, I was able to restrain my cravings and opt for other alternatives.

There was only one day in the whole Lenten Season where I cheated, and that was at Spring Fest. You guessed it ~Mister Softee~ was there. How could I pass that up? It was the one, and only time I cheated, and it was worth it at that moment.

Now that Lent is almost over and as of Sunday, I will be able to enjoy the deliciousness of ice cream once again, I’m not so sure that I’ll be racing to the ice cream machine every night. I felt a lot more energetic and less bloated from not consuming as much dairy. I also noticed that my dinners and the rest of my eating habits got progressively better as time went on because I cut out the high sugar level in my diet daily. I drank a lot more water as well and became the #basic college student carrying their hydro flask with them everywhere.

Was Lent a success for me? 100%. I’m so glad I decided to do it this year and am incredibly proud of myself for actually sticking to it!
