The Sun Protection Products You’ll Need for Relaxing on the Beach This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

With summer rapidly approaching, it’s time to talk about sun protection (But it’s important to protect your skin all year!). As someone who has very pale and sensitive skin, a family history of skin cancer, and has already had multiple moles removed, I’m always on the hunt for the best sun protection products.

There are many arguments about which SPF sunscreen to buy and if the higher ones really are better, as mentioned in an article on Business Insider. While buying a product between SPF 30 and 50 is usually a safe bet, the more important factor is how often you apply. Sunscreen comes off in the water (even when it says waterproof) and on your clothes. Reapplying is a critical part of keeping your skin safe.

While most of us use sunscreen when we lie out in the sun, our skin is exposed all day. We don’t often think to apply sunscreen while walking to class or driving to the grocery store or taking our dog out, but those are all times we face sun exposure, and that exposure accumulates over time. The easiest way to protect your skin every day is by using daily products like lip balm and lotions that are infused with sunscreen, so you don’t even have to think about it.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30

As a very light and non-oily moisturizer, this is a great option for all skin types. With SPF 30, this is a perfect product to protect your skin daily without having to think about the extra step of applying sunscreen.

Blistex Deep Renewal

This is my favorite lip balm of all time. It’s particularly moisturizing, plus it has SPF 15. It’s easy to forget about protecting your lips from the sun, but it’s just as important as protecting the rest of your skin.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Non-Greasy Sunscreen Stick

This is my go-to sunscreen product. Sunscreen sticks are great because you don’t have to get the lotion on your hands, and it’s easy to slip in your bag and apply on the go. This particular stick is perfect because it is non-greasy, has SPF 70, is water resistant, and can be used on both your face and body.

SOJOS Cat Eye Mirrored Flat Lenses

Many people forget that sunglasses are a critical part of sun protection. An article from Consumer Reports says that sunlight exposure can increase the risk of vision conditions and skin cancer on the eyelid. You want a pair of sunglasses that protects your eyes from 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays, which can also be indicated by the term “UV 400.” Good sunglasses don’t have to be expensive, like this pair on Amazon for $12.99.

Another important part of skin protection is having yearly checkups with a dermatologist. You’re not too young to start seeing a dermatologist, even if you haven’t noticed any skin issues yet. In between appointments, perform regular self-checks as well (see guidelines).

Taking good care of your skin is critical to both your health and appearance. Put on some sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat and go make an appointment with a dermatologist!
