There are shows that you know and love, that give you feelings of nostalgia, joy, and laughter. Fresh Prince, Full House, and everything there far and in between. But there are some shows that in my opinion are necessary to watch as a young woman in 2019.
Some are classics, others are not but they all embody what it’s like to be young and figuring out what you want and need!
- The Bold Type

This show follows three best friends, Jane, Kat & Sutton, as they navigate their careers at “Scarlet Magazine” while also juggling relationships, family drama, questioning their sexuality, etc. This show tackles topics that the average 18-25 year old woman deals with in their daily lives, but also focuses on taboo topics like fertility care for women and dating in the workplace.
- Grown-ish

Grown-ish follows Zoey Johnson in this Black-ish spinoff, where she is adapting to college life and everything that comes with it. Some of the common topics brought up in the show are partying, hookup culture & dating, as well as finding the balance between being a kid and an adult.
- Sex and the City & The Carrie Diaries

Sex and the City is the go to single girls classic, but some people don’t know that there is also a prequel to the iconic 90s show know as The Carrie Diaries. Both shows examine how different situations regarding sex and relationships affect women. The Carrie Diaries focuses on Carrie’s final years of high school, while Sex and the City is focused on Carrie and her three best friends in their 30s. Both shows take a similar approach to storytelling, but the content is different based on the point in her life she is in.
- Jane the Virgin

A modern day telenovela, what is not to love. Throughout the series you follow Jane and her loved ones as she tries to live her life after being accidentally artificially inseminated – yes that is the premise of the show. The show is hilariously dramatic and heartwarming, you will fall in love with the characters and get immensely invested in the storyline wondering what will happen next.
- Good Trouble

A spinoff from the young adult drama The Fosters following the two sisters, Callie and Mariana, as they start their adult lives with their first real jobs and dealing with all the challenges adulthood has to offer. This show still has the heart of the original, but with more of a focus on challenges that millennials are dealing with romantically, politically, professionally and emotionally. If you are looking for a show that is real and relatable at the same time this is the show for you. Regardless if you aren’t in the same situation as the characters you can find a little bit of yourself in them.
Every show on this list is different with how they approach storytelling as well as how they depict love & relationships – which is why I love them. Whether you like shows filled with comedy, drama or something in the middle each of these shows has something unique to offer.
