Packing clothes for back-to-school always seems like an impossible task – especially for FIT students. How does anyone pick which clothes to bring to school and which to leave behind? If you bring your new favorite trendy red booties, you won’t have room for those basic black booties you wear everywhere. It honestly feels like picking a favorite child.
To make matters worse, living away from home means you need to bring everything you are going to wear. Everything. This makes the discrimination of what stays at home so much harder. As much as you say you’ll definitely wear that top you haven’t worn since junior year of high school, in reality you’ll probably never even touch it. To make things a little bit easier this year, I’ve created a list of the things you’ll realistically wear the most come back-to-school.
Band tees
Bruce Springsteen Tee, Free People, $78, shop now
The beloved band tee. Where would we be without them? From pairing with leggings and sneakers for class to knotting in the front with a skirt for parties, this closet staple will get the most use out of any of your other tops.
Jeans
Ultra High Rise Super Skinny Jeans, Abercrombie, $39, shop now
Whether boyfriend, flare, or classic skinny, your favorite jeans will be your BFF during the school year. The more worn-in the better, IMO.
Sneakers
Aldo Elebririth Sneaker, DSW, $60, shop now
Gone are the days of our sneakers only seeing the inside of a gym. Today, sneakers are a wardrobe staple that come in endless colors and styles, so they can truly be paired with anything. Plus, your feet will thank you after hours walking around the city.
Denim jacket
Jean Jacket, Target, $38, shop now
I don’t know about you, but my denim jacket is the one piece in my closet that gets constant use year round. It’s perfect for layering and goes with everything you own.
Headbands
Mustard Soft Headband, American Eagle, $13, shop now
Whenever I’m having a bad hair day, my headbands are my saviors. Throw your messy hair in a bun and throw a headband on top for a “my bun is messy on purpose” look.
Casual dress
Floral Print Ruffled Skater Dress, Forever 21, $18, shop now
For some reason, lots of people think dresses take lots of extra effort. The way I see it, when you wear a dress you have your whole outfit in one step, no need to worry about matching a top and bottom. Bonus: not having to wear pants.
Cardigans
Jack by BB Dakota Knit Fresh Cardigan, Shopbop, $44, shop now
Cardigans are making a comeback and I’m 100% here for it. Throw yours on on those chilly mornings walking to class.
While we all wish we had the energy to come up with a cute outfit every single day, the reality is that we get busy and sometimes it’s easiest to just run out the door in your tried and true basics. Save yourself a headache – and some extra space – and narrow down your closet at school to the things you’ll get the most use out of. You’ll thank me later.
