Halsey is an artist, a musician, an activist, a fashion icon and an all-around strong, badass woman. So why are media outlets so interested in her personal life instead of her many qualities?

In a series of tweets, now deleted, the 24-year-old alternative pop singer explained that she was losing interest in doing interviews. She claims that journalists often depict her as “bipolar,” demon” and “whore.” She states the quotes media outlets make use of are often out of context and used to stir drama and clickbait. Her art takes a backseat to what the media considers important: her breakups, her mental illness and her miscarriage.

Halsey’s fanbase took to Twitter to gush about how she deserves more from the media than to relive past trauma. It sparked the hashtag #WeHearYouHalsey, where one fan tweeted: “Halsey is the only artist I know that speaks for and with her fans. She stands up for what she believes in and brings awareness to important movements and beliefs. She is more than bisexuality. She is more than her exes and her past. She is ASHLEY.  #WeHearYouHalsey.” (Halsey’s real name is Ashley Frangipane.)

Halsey wants to talk about her art. The tweets made me wonder what I would ask her if I ever got to interview her. So, here are my less problematic interview questions for Halsey. Questions I think she would feel are worth answering.

  1. You grew up listening to artists like Brand New, Oasis and The Story So Far. Can we expect you to go back to your rock/alternative roots with this next album?
  2. What’s a day in the studio like for you? Have you ever written a song and immediately headed to the studio to lay down tracks because you knew it was special? How does it feel when you know you have a hit?
  3. What’s the wildest piece of clothing in your closet right now?
  4. There’s no denying that you and your fans have a close-knit relationship. What are some of the sweetest things your fans have done for you?
  5. How do you handle the pressure of knowing millions of young women look to you as inspiration? Is it as terrifying as it sounds?
  6. Would you ever publish a book of your poetry or paintings?
  7. Is there such a thing as being too open with your fans? Where do you draw the line?
  8. What’s your favorite tattoo?
  9. Who is an artist you would love to collaborate with?
  10. Is there a difference between Ashley and Halsey? How do you stay so grounded?
