New music gets released at a frankly frightening rate. Here’s some new music I think is worth listening to, along with some older favorites. Enjoy the last gasps of summer, while it’s still 90 degrees and the sun doesn’t set mid-afternoon.

  1. Blue Bloods by Death Cab for Cutie. If you’re like me, you’ve been listening to Death Cab since you were an angsty 13-year-old listening to I Will Follow You Into The Dark and are always pleasantly surprised to remember they still release music. This song kind of reminds me of an older, sprawled-out Death Cab song with some lo-fi, Mac Demarco-esque effects. I adore it. (Blue Bloods is from DCFC’s new EP, Blue Bloods, released September 6th.)

  2. Barely Legal by The Strokes. A staple of any cool-kid’s regular music rotation. Casablanca’s slightly muffled vocals and the stellar guitar work has already been written about, but words will never do this song justice. It’s truly one of those songs that fill you with an unexplainable wave of nostalgia. (Barely Legal is from The Strokes’s album Is This It, released July 30th, 2001.)

  3. Ice Cream Sundae by Inhaler. I’ll be honest, I had no idea who this artist was until I was perusing Spotify’s “New Music Friday” playlist, but I’m glad to know now. The singer has an honest, clear voice that gets wrapped in production that harkens back to delightfully cheesy 80’s synth-pop. Perfect to wave goodbye to summer and wave hello to fall with. (Ice Cream Sundae is a new single from Inhaler, released September 5th.)

  4. Pictures of You by The Cure. I feel like my love of synth might be bleeding through into this playlist, but what playlist would be complete without The Cure? This is seven minutes of one of the most beautiful love songs of all time, and some of the best production the band ever had. A masterpiece if I’ve ever heard one. (Pictures of You is from The Cure’s album Disintegration, released May 2nd, 1989.)

  5. bad idea! by girl in red. girl in red is one of those artists who makes it big by their songs becoming viral in Tiktoks and Instagram edits, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially with her talent. This release is more upbeat than some of her more recognizable work, but it’s a danceable, vaguely-haunting change of pace I appreciate. (bad idea! is from girl in red’s new EP, chapter 2, released September 6th.)

Journalism major. I like dogs, poetry, and iced coffee, in that order.
