Based in Benson, Minnesota, Tiny Moving Parts consists of a trio of family members: William Chevalier on drums, Matthew Chevalier on bass/vocals, and their cousin Dylan Mattheisen on guitar/vocals. Since junior high, the band has created musical art that tackles concepts such as mental health, morality, anxiety, etc.
On September 13, 2019, they released their fifth studio album breathe. Not much was anticipated from this release, but when it did, it seemed like the world stopped for a minute and you could hear the birds chirping.
Tiny Moving Parts brought melody and a sense of belonging to this album, reminding us all that we are together in this hard thing called life. It reminds us that we experience love, regret, desire, and happiness all the same.
From the way your “smile shines so brightly through the window” in “The Midwest Sky,” to screaming “someone fix me” in “I Can’t Shake,” breathe shows the rollercoaster of emotions we all often face in life.
Where breathe really shines is in the guitar melodies. A few of my favorites are in “Vertebrae,” “Soft Spot” and “Icicles (Morning Glow).”
I can’t help but feel a sense of community and understanding from listening to this beautifully done album. You get the feeling of relief that you may get from talking to that one friend about your personal problems, the one friend that understands what you’re going through and the one you know won’t turn their back on you.
They get the darkest parts of you, and because they understand, they know just how to bring you back up.

There are no skippable songs, no inconsistencies, and the album is very strong throughout. Overall, this album gets a 10/10 for me (and that’s saying a lot).
