Underrated Netflix Shows and Movies to Watch on your Study Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Manhattan chapter.

When I’m in the mood to relax and take a study break, I turn on Netflix for some mindless entertainment. Yet watching The Office over and over again is well, boring. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the show but every now and then I need to shake it up a bit. If you’re like me and you’re looking for a new show to watch, here’s a list of some underrated movies and TV shows you may not know about, and they deserve more hype.

Dynasty (2017–)

Meet the Carrington’s: a filthy-rich Atlanta based family where the only thing that’s normal in their lives is drama. This modern remake of the original Dynasty in 1980 mainly centers around Fallon Carrington (Liz Gillies), who is the daughter of the arrogant billionaire, Blake Carrington (Grant Show). When Blake marries his employee, Cristal Flores (Nathalie Kelley), and gives her the company’s CEO position over his daughter, Fallon feuds with Cristal and is determined to uncover her murky backstory. With never-ending family drama, forbidden romances, and a whole lot of glitz and glamour, Dynasty will always keep you entertained. And if you liked Gillies in Victorious, you’re going to LOVE her in this.

Young & Hungry (2014-2018)

As an aspiring and unemployed Chef, Gabi Diamond (Emily Osment) stumbles across the perfect job. Cooking as a personal chef for Josh Kaminski (Jonathan Sadowski), a young, rich, and dreamy millionaire. Not only does the show focus around Gabi’s personal career, but it follows her ongoing love story with her boss Josh. Young & Hungry is very witty, light hearted, and the jokes the characters make are hysterical. I don’t know if it’s because I was a fan of hers on Hannah Montana, but I found Osment’s character to be very disney channel-esque, yet more mature.

Imposters (2017-2018)

Ezra (Rob Heaps) has just married his true love Eva and nothing could ruin his happiness… that is until he wakes up the night after his wedding to find Eva gone with all his money. A guy named Richard (Parker Young) shows up at his house demanding for his wife Alice, who has an uncanny resemblance to Eva. In order to find the woman they believe to be their wife, the two guys then make their way to a woman named Julia, yet she claims the woman they’re looking for is her wife, Cece. The three learn that they’ve all been swindled by the same woman, her real name Maddie. As they continue to track her down to get vengeance and claim their money back, they learn the shocking reason why she continues to be a con artist.

The Society (2019–)

Imagine living in a town polluted with a terrible smell. How’d it get there? Why is it there? What caused it? That all remains a mystery to the townspeople of West Ham. A group of the town’s high schoolers have a chance to escape the weird smell for the weekend when they leave for a class trip, yet on their way there, they’re forced to turn back around due to dangerous weather. When they get back, everyone is gone. Their parents are missing, there’s no cell service, and no sign of the life they once knew. Now, these high schoolers are forced to form a society of their own. The show is a modern take on the classic “Lord of the Flies,” and is only one season (which trust me, you will watch very fast).

Person of Interest (2011-2016)

Follow the lives of former CIA agent Reese (Jim Caviezel) and his partner Finch (Michael Emerson) as they attempt to use modern technology to predict crimes and prevent them from happening. Using an advanced program, they are able to predict who will be the person of interest in a future violent crime. The two make a perfect pair–– with Reese’s background in detective work and with Finch’s advanced technology skills, they become the ultimate crime-fighting team.

When We First Met (2018)

Noah Ashby (Adam DeVine) has met the perfect girl… but she just wants to be friends. What could he have done wrong? How could he have been more impressive? When he gets a chance to change the past and travel back in time to get his dream girl, he takes it. But as he tries time and time again to make things perfect, he realizes that perfect isn’t always what he once thought it was.

Set It Up (2018)

Harper (Zoey Deutch) works around the clock and gets paid too little when she works for her uptight and demanding boss, who needs to chill out. Coincidentally, Charlie (Glen Powell) is in the same boat as Harper–– working for a crazy, stressed, and work-obsessed boss. Will Harper and Charlie be able to catch a break? In an attempt to get their bosses to focus on something other than work, the two try to set their bosses up together.

Secret Obsession (2019)

Jennifer Williams (Brenda Song) has just suffered a near-death accident. When she wakes up, she can’t remember anything; all she knows is that her husband is there to take care of her. Yet Jennifer’s suspicions arise when she learns her husband isn’t who he says he is. What is he hiding? This thrilling, frightening, and heartbreaking story will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
