Choosing music based on the mood we are in is natural. When we experience a breakup (even one with a friend) we often go straight to the sad, slow songs about heartbreak. While that’s okay for a little while, at some point it’s time to change up that playlist in order to let yourself move on. So, if you’re ready to move on, but not quite ready to give up the “breakup” theme, here are a few songs you should “add to queue” right away.
1. “I Forgot That You Existed” -Taylor Swift
When we go through a breakup it feels like we are never going to get that person off our minds. This song is a reminder that one day you ex won’t haunt your thoughts, and you’ll be OKAY.
“I forgot that you existed / And I thought that it would kill me, but it didn’t”
2. “Thank You, Next” -Arianna Grande
This song is a great reminder that everything does happen for a reason. People come in and out of our lives to teach us something, and one day we will realize what that is.
“Look what you taught me / And for that, I say / Thank you, next”
3. “Truth Hurts” -Lizzo
This song is an instant mood and confidence boost… plus it reminds you that you’re worth more than the way he was treating you.
“I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever be your side chick”
4. “FYI” -Cassadee Pope
Ever have an ex that likes to walk into your life every time his new life isn’t picture perfect… or is that just me? Either way this song is great if you’ve ever felt like “the other woman”.
“Sorry, I’m not sorry / It’s not my problem anymore”
5. “Praying” -Kesha
While the story behind this slower song isn’t exactly a break up, it is a great song for anyone who has experienced trauma of any kind from the person they’re no longer involved with.
“And we both know all the truth I could tell / I’ll just say this is ‘I wish you farewell’”
6. “Buy My Own Drinks” -Runaway June
Runaway June uses the perfect lyrics to explain that being “alone” isn’t as scary as we think it is.
“I don’t need nobody else / Yeah I can buy my own drinks”
7. “Love Ain’t” -Eli Young Band
The lyrics below say it all. Sometimes that just “what love ain’t”.
“The way you’re talking sounds like he’s somebody you should hate / I may not know what love is girl, but I know what love ain’t”
8. “Shout Out to My Ex” -Little Mix
This song reminds you that you’ll come out the other side better than ever.
“You made my heart break and that made me who I am / Here’s to my ex, hey, look at me now”
9. “Some Girls” Jameson Rodgers
Everyone experiences breakups differently, even the guys. This one reminds us that just because not everyone shows it, everyone hurts at some point.
“Some times, some girls make it easy on you / Some girls never do.”
