Jeffree Star: An Overview – From Past to Present to Future

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Jeffree Star has taken the beauty community by storm in the past few years. Starting as a Myspace sensation and an up-and-coming music artist, Jeffree came from humble beginnings – having nothing and working his way up to a multi-millionaire status.

In the Beginning

As mentioned, Jeffree started on Myspace, becoming an icon almost overnight as a male in full glam makeup and brightly colored hair – breaking all expectations and stereotypes for male singers at the time. He released singles such as Beauty Killer, Eyelash Curlers and Butcher Knives, and Ice Cream. Star had many concerts and gigs, also being a popular artist at Van’s Warped tour; Star is making an appearance this year, not as an artist, but as a ‘vendor’ setting up a meet-and-greet for his fans.

The Rise of Jeffree Star Cosmetics

Star then used his platform in music to launch his company, Jeffree Star Cosmetics. He began small and rose to something much greater, having a current net worth of $50 million. His company, since the launch, now offers many different makeup related products, from breathtaking lipsticks and coveted palettes to the iconic Jeffree Star tracksuits. Jeffree is always hands-on in all of his products and is first and foremost an entrepreneur and businessman, guaranteeing that all of his products are vegan and cruelty-free.

These products run on the more expensive side of the spectrum, but the quality seems to measure up to such a price and hasn’t deterred fans from showing their support. Star’s momentum has not deterred either as he is continuing to push the boundaries with makeup. He began with his iconic palettes and is now striving for the perfect formula and shade range, releasing his own line of concealers this past April, with many more projects in the works.

Branching Out

With the beginning of his company Star has since then started a YouTube channel, possessing 16 million subscribers as of yesterday (Sept 18). His channel features makeup tutorials, collaborations with other YouTubers, daily vlogging, and behind the scenes of some of his events. Jeffree has done many collabs with other YouTubers and stars, most notably, James Charles, Lipsticknick, and most recently, the Dolan twins, staring the birth of Jeff Dolan. He is also ever-present on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, always talking to his fans directly in daily stories as a form of informal vlogging.

In the beauty community there are a lot of ‘scandals’ and drama (i.e. James Charles and Tati Westbrook), and friends come and go for people like Star, but one good friend has stuck by his side and now there are big things in the works for these two as they collab for more than just a three-part series together.

Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson

In Aug 2018, Shane Dawson released a collaboration series with Jeffree Star, and it took the internet by storm. Dawson, infamous for his conspiracy theories, and vlogging dropped this in-depth series, going into the mind of Jeffree Star, and for the first time gave his viewers a peek behind the curtain. This is not the first series that Dawson has done like this; he also filmed a similar video documentary with Jake Paul.

Since the filming of that series, the friendship between the two has blossomed, as Jeffree surprised Shane with a $15,000 Gucci haul. Along with that each of them has been dropping hints throughout their more recent videos that something big is coming. The most notable video is Ryland Adams’ (Shane’s fiancé) video “Shane’s Beauty Room Make Over Surprise” in which many shelves were blurred in the footage to keep secrets from being unveiled.

Fans wait in anticipation as the time seems to be running out until this new collaboration is unveiled.

What’s Next?

Undoubtedly Jeffree Star will continue to make more YouTube videos, release new cosmetic lines, and forever love Louis Viton and Birkin bags. With his most recent collaboration with Morphe, fans and the makeup community alike will be on the edge of their seats to see where this entrepreneur takes himself with 2020 in the distant future.
