I never thought this would happen to me.

I came to college as I was told was the best option for me and what I thought was the best option for me. I had so many options to choose from and it was difficult for me to make the decision. I wanted to be far, but not too far. I wanted to reinvent myself, but not become unrecognizable.

I decided that my major should be math because I wanted to be a math teacher, something I thought I always wanted to do. Every teacher I have ever had tried their best to provide for me what they could, plus more. Teachers are more than just teachers, I’m sure you know that. Teachers can change a generation who, in turn, can change the world. This is how I saw teachers and that is why I believed I wanted to be one so bad. I want to change people for the better while also teaching something I liked–math. It was killing two birds with one stone, but as time went along things changed.

Growing up I feel like as children we were only exposed to certain jobs: teacher, doctor, dentist, police officer, etc. When someone asked you the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I thought the only options I had were the only ones I knew about. I know there’s the choice of becoming an entrepreneur, but that involves partaking in a  business. I did not know that I could create a major that fits me and my interests and I think this alternative is something that should be told to college, high school, junior high, or even elementary students.

I am in the process of changing my major to Integrative Studies. Basically, I have the freedom to choose three fields of studies from any of the colleges. I am really indecisive and, after recently attending the informational session, I realized that there are so many choices that I didn’t know I had–a reoccurring theme as you can tell. So far, I am interested in Women’s Studies, Communication, Marketing, Digital Retailing, Journalism, and African American studies. I am interested in all of these areas, and with this opportunity I can create something that I am passionate about. If I’m going to be working a job for the rest of my life, I don’t want it to feel like a job at all you feel?

I’ve learned it’s okay to not know what to do, even when you thought you had it all figured out. I’ve learned that you can do something that’s never been done before. I’ve learned that to do something that fuels the passion inside of you is to do something that makes you happy.

I am a sophomore at the University of North Texas with a major in integrative studies which allows me to choose 3 concentrations and study them all at once. Mine are business, communications, and marketing with a double minor in African American and women gender studies. I am sociable, as some would say, and funny, as most would say. I would call myself an introvert that is an extrovert. Honestly, I am trying to still figure me and my journey out and I hope you can join me for the ride.
