Though the Latinx community has not been receiving much representation in the media or within major brands, Latinx entrepreneurs are here to change that. Since 2017, there has been a significant increase in Latinx owned brands/companies. In 2017, Latinx businesses made up 40% of US businesses. We are finally being represented across many markets. No more buying from brands who do not offer Spanish customer service, labels or posts. This Hispanic Heritage Month, make sure you’re supporting fellow Latinx brands and small businesses. Here are 5 brands you should be supporting this month:
1. Rizos Curls
This cruelty-free and curly girl friendly natural hair care line by Julissa Prado is Latina-owned! Rizos Curls is made to celebrate all hair types, “from one curly girl to another”. Julissa’s brand is active on social media, constantly engaging with the Latinx and natural hair community. I love their deep conditioner – it works for every different hair texture in my household!
2. Hause of Curls
Sherly Tavarez, Dominican fashion stylist and now entrepreneur, is the CEO and founder of Hause of Curls. Hause of Curls is a brand targeted towards Latinas with natural hair, featuring multiple T-shirt collections that aim to encourage self-love and self-acceptance. Get your hands on the “Afro-Latina, y tu?” t-shirt now!
3. Vive Cosmetics
Vive Cosmetics is a beauty brand created by and for Latinxs. The perfect mixture of Latinx pride did not exist until Vive Cosmetics came along. What’s the best part? The clever names of their lipstick shades (like K lo K and Café con Leche). Even better than that? They’re beso-proof! All their lipsticks are vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free and gluten-free.
4. Hija De Tu Madre
Hija De Tu Madre aims to showcase the cultural identity of Latinx through fashionable apparel and pieces of art. Patty Delgado, founder and designer of HDTM, defines the brand as “an ode to mujeres who are unapologetically Latina.” First, let me just share how much I love their stationary. The Spanglish in the pieces is the perfect strategy to show the complexity in being Latinx in America. Shop their Bandera Jackets now!
5. Honey Baby Naturals
This is the first latina-owned hair and skin care line available at major retailers! Since 2016, Aisha Ceballos, the founder of Honey Baby Naturals, has been delivering top notch honey-based hair products. Aisha’s goals was to deliver a product for mothers who are searching for the most effective hair products for their children.
We’re CEO’s, founders and jefas too. The Latinx community is here. And we’re here to stay. National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States is the period of time in which people recognize and celebrate the contributions of the Hispanic and Latino Americans to US heritage and culture. It ends on October 15th, but we can always support Latinx brands. Let’s support at least one Latinx brand this Hispanic Heritage Month!
