The 5 Best Things that Happened at the Emmys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

1. The Game of Thrones cast said “goodbye”.

The cast of Game of Thrones said farewell after their show ran for 8 seasons and ten years.  The principal characters from the show walked on stage and received a standing ovation.  The cast also presented the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.  Game of Thrones won the Emmy for Best Drama Series.

2. Phoebe Waller-Bridge owned the Emmys.

She won three out of the four Emmy’s she was nominated for: Best Actress in a Comedy Series, Best Writing in a Comedy Series and Best Comedy Series, all for Fleabag.  This caused somewhat of an upset because Veep was predicted to sweep in the comedy category.

3. Jodie Comer won Best Leading Actress in a Drama and her reaction was so pure.

Everyone and their brother assumed that Sandra Oh was going to win for her performance in Killing Eve, but her co-star Jodie Comer took the win. Comer could not have been more surprised by the turn of events.  She even told her parents not to come because she knew she wasn’t going to win.  I can say she has probably never been so happy to be wrong.

4. Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel on no host.

After a slew of controversies in the past few years surrounding film and television award show hosts, the Television Academy decided to forgo a host and go for celebrity presenters instead.  Colbert and Kimmel used their time presenting to complain that the lack of hosts at awards shows has been putting them out of work. The pair even talked about the restaurant Applebees having hosts. It was hilarious.5. Homer Simpson opened the show.

Homer Simpson welcomed the audience to the 71st Emmys. He surprised everyone by falling through the stage.  It was a great start to a great show.
