It’s October, which means that it’s spooky season! It’s the perfect time to start getting those Halloween decorations out. But sometimes it might not be worth buying expensive decorations that you only use once a year. That’s why you should consider DIY decorations!
Here are a few simple but fun decorations that you can try out for yourself this year:
1. Using dryer vents to make pumpkins

Materials:
- Dryer vents (different sizes if you want)
- Hot glue gun
- Wire cutters
- Scissors
- Paint/brushes
- Stem (cinnamon stick, construction paper, wood, whatever you want!)
- Moss
For this DIY, you would have to cut the dryer vents using wire cutters and scissors to your desired length. Then use the hot glue gun to glue the ends together. Be very careful at this part because the glue is hot and be sure to wear gloves if you have to. After waiting for the glue to dry, you can paint the vent whatever color you want. You can go for a basic orange pumpkin color or change it up and make the pumpkin a bright color. After waiting for the paint to dry, you can make the stem of the pumpkin from a cinnamon stick, construction paper, or wood! It’s totally up to what you can find. The final step would be to put some moss around the stem to make it look complete.
2. Tin can ghost windsock

Materials:
- Tin can (whatever size you have)
- Hammer
- Awl or screwdriver
- White spray paint
- Black paint
- White ribbon
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
- Twine
- Paperclip
For this DIY, paint the tin can using white spray paint. Depending on how opaque the color is, you may want to do a couple of layers. Then use the hammer and awl/screwdriver to make a hole at the top of the tin. After doing so, trace a ghostly face onto the can and paint it black. Then you would cut the white ribbon to your desired length. They all don’t have to be the same length. Make sure you cut the bottom at an angle so that it doesn’t unravel easily. The next step is to glue the white ribbon onto the tin can from the inside. The last step is to tightly tie a piece of twine onto a paperclip and pull it through the top of the can. Now you can hang this outside and let the wind do the rest of the work!
3. Skull string art

Materials:
- 2’3’ piece of wood about ½ inch thick
- White nails
- Black paint
- Tape
- White string/twine
The first step to this DIY is to paint the wood black or any color you wish. While you wait for it to dry, look for a template of a skull that has an outline you can use that is big enough to fit inside the wood. After that, you would have to cut the outline of the skull and tape it onto the wood. Using the hammer and nails, outline the shape of the skull, eyes, nose, and mouth. The space between the nails should be about 1 inch. You want to make sure that the nail doesn’t go through the other side. When you finish hammering all the nails in, tear off the paper so that all that’s left on the wood are the nails. Tie one end of the string/twine onto a nail and this is your time to start getting creative! Wrap the strings in zig-zag patterns until the shape of the skull starts to take place. Make sure to leave the eyes and nose empty. You can fill in the mouth part vertically to show the teeth. When you feel as if it looks complete, tie the end of the string onto the nail that you stop at.
