So, I haven’t actually seen the latest season yet because it’s midterm season (yay!!!), but until I finally get the time to watch it, and get to see how it compares, I’ve ranked the previous seasons in order of best to worst.
- Coven (2013)

Love. Action. Drama. Threesomes with Evan Peters. Can you find better entertainment? This season full of witches is set in the heart of New Orleans and shows the dark nature behind pretty faces to keep you on your toes. I won’t say more, so I don’t spoil anything, but watch it!! Right now!!
- Murder House (2011)

Ahh the season that started it all. During and after its airing , every single emo kid had its quotes on their Tumblr. Tate and Violet had the tragic love story we all dreamed of..except when he hooked up with her mom (awk). Still, the season was AMAZING and started a story that has just recently been completed.
- Apocalypse (2018)

ROCKED. MY. WORLD. Honestly, this is the only season I completely finished while it was airing. Usually I start them on cable, stop, and finish it when it finally premieres on Netflix. Apocalypse was different, though. It creates a new storyline while combining the plots of Murder House and Coven together with a sprinkling of Hotel. The new characters (spoiler: Cody Fern and Billie Lourd kill their roles) and returning ones unite to create my all time favorite season. It would’ve filled the number 1 spot, but without my true love of Murder House and Coven, I never could’ve appreciate this show in the same way.
- Asylum (2012)

This season took an interesting approach to show the abuse of the mentally ill in the 1960s. It also showed corruption in the Catholic church as well as the evils of the Holocaust. While this was a lot to cover, the season succeeded well. It was dark, controversial, and briefly guest-starred Adam Levine, all of which are ingredients to a great season.
- Roanoke (2016)

Roanoke was a very unique season, and while I appreciated their creativity, it felt cliche. It was also confusing to distinguish the character from the actor portraying the character during the beginning. The documentary style tried and failed trying to parody reality television. Putting this aside, the season had a good, yet frightening plot full of twists. It left me on my toes and was good enough to let me ignore the odd style of filming.
- Hotel (2015)

This season gave me nightmares. Lady Gaga does her role in the best way and her performances left me with a healthy fear of her. Hotel brings a new level for American Horror Story and was much more disturbing compared to the rest of the seasons. I recommend having some company when watching this season. You also should finish it before trying to watch Apocalypse.
- Freak Show (2014)

This season was interesting to say the least. If badly animated conjoined twins and clowns named Twisty are your thing, then you’ll love it! I found it hard to watch and honestly never finished the entire thing. Maybe my fear of clowns held me back from enjoying this season, but it definitely earned its spot near the bottom of the list.
- Cult (2017)

The clowns might have held me back from enjoying this season as well, but I found this season the least enjoyable. It was very politically charged. Even though it was fitting for the time it came out, the political aspect made it bleak. This season gives off major The Purge vibes, on top of showing the turmoil of election season. The clown appearances were fitting, while terrifying, for the time period as clowns had been become a crisis in the summer of 2016. Overall, this season was a reach for the series which normally succeeded in mixing reality, fantasy, and fear.
