The weather is finally starting to turn. We here at JHU have experienced a few crisp autumnal days, but this is only the beginning. Now that fall has started, here are some things you’ll find useful for autumn in Baltimore.

1. An umbrella.

Baltimore is a very, very rainy city. Baltimore, on average, has more rain than the average for the rest of the US. According to the Baltimore Sun, last year (2018) was the largest amount of rain on record for the city. So, an umbrella (or two) is essential. I have one large umbrella to carry around when I know it will rain, and a smaller one that I keep in my backpack on suspiciously grey days. I also recommend investing in a pair of rainboots or setting aside a pair of tall boots that you don’t mind getting covered in mud.

2. A scarf, hat, and gloves.

Once the weather gets chilly, these are very useful. Even when it is not cold enough to wear a proper coat, a hat and scarf can help prevent a cold. Once we get into winter temperatures towards the end of fall, gloves will be your saving grace.

3. The cold & flu prevention essentials.

Emergen-C, constant hand-sanitizing, vitamins, tea –whatever helps you stay healthy when people being to get sick. Cold weather = people with colds. Taking a sick day in college is not nearly as fun as it was in elementary school. So armor up, people!

4. Water.

Once the weather cools off, it is easy to forget to continue hydrating. Water is important for your health all the time. It keeps you from fainting, helps your skin, aids in bowel movements, and so much more. If you hate the idea of drinking cold water when it’s cold outside, drink room temperature water, or have some tea (make sure it’s not too hot though!)

5. Fall mood-setters

Last, don’t forget to enjoy the season! Fall is a favorite of many, and Hopkins is especially picturesque at this time of year. Get cozy with some fuzzy socks and your favorite fall drink- apple cider, hot chocolate, pumpkin spice lattes…I personally love chai tea lattes with almond milk (and a shot of espresso if I’m exhausted). Make sure to take a break in your hectic schedules to notice the changing colors of the leaves and feel the warmth of the sun on a chilly day!

Camille is a sophomore at Johns Hopkins. When she's not doing homework, playing club field hockey, eating, or going to spin at the Rec Center, she's probably online shopping. Her likes include fashion, food, and photography; her dislikes consist of cilantro, (involuntary) early mornings, and people who don't like animals.
