It’s spooky season everyone and what’s one of the best parts of this time of year? Being able to binge-watch all types of Halloween movies. Us being college students, unless you have a tv handy, being able to watch ABC’s 31 Nights of Halloween is nearly impossible. So, I went through three of the most popular streaming sites to hook you up with classic and current Halloween movies for your marathon.
Netflix:
Insidious (current)- Though there are newer Halloween movies on Netflix I thought Insidious would be enjoyable for everyone. This film is from 2010 is about a family who thinks their house is haunted but it turns out it’s not the house that’s haunted… it’s their son. This movie is one of four in the franchise and they are all worth watching. It is rated a 6/10 on rotten tomatoes, but I feel that doesn’t do it justice. It is creepy, suspenseful, has the right amount of jump scares, and is perfect for a scary movie marathon.
Carrie (classic)- The chosen classic from Netflix is an old Stephen King horror novel turned movie. This movie was released in 1976 and revolves around the struggles of the teenage girl Carrie White who faces taunting from her classmates and abuse from her religiously devoted mother. As strange occurrences begin she starts to suspect that she has supernatural powers, but that isn’t even that start of this story. When Carrie is invited to prom but an empathetic classmate Carries lets her guard down which results in things taking a violent turn. This movie is definitely worth watching for any teen girl who has felt misunderstood in life; maybe this will answer some of your questions about who you truly are.
Hulu:
The Nun (current)- The Nun is the newest movie in The Conjuring franchise. It was released just last year, in 2018. If you haven’t seen the other Conjuring movies don’t worry because this movie takes place in the year 1952 when the first Conjuring movie takes place in 1971. (So timeline wise the first Conjuring takes place after the Nun and if you wish to watch that it is available on Netflix) The Nun, in my opinion, is one of the creepiest movies in the franchise as it titled “The Darkest Chapter in the Conjuring Universe”. It follows a young Nun and Priest who investigate the suicide of a Nun in a Romanian cloister. As they investigate the offense against faith the two begin to question their own beliefs as they realize even the holiest places can be a target for evil. This movie is also the origin story of the villain demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren face in The Conjuring 2. So if you will be okay questioning your holy beliefs through a film that is based on true events this is a movie worth watching, but I recommend you don’t watch alone.
The AmityVille Horror (Classic)- This 2005 remake of the film The Amityville Horror, released in 1979. In my opinion, this is the better of the two options, but the original version is also available on Hulu. This movie follows the Lutz family who has purchased the house of horrors, which is still standing in Long Island, New York. Stranger occurrences begin in the house and Kathy Lutz begins to realize that the tragedy that occurred in the house before their purchase may not have been caused by an insane family but he was rather convinced to do so by a malevolent presence. According to the reviews of this movie, it isn’t the best, and because of how old it is that could be true. However, with the way the story is told it is quite good. It doesn’t just scare its audience with a bunch of jump scares. It tells a true story and there are scenes that will scare the hell out of you.
Amazon Prime:
Corpse Bride (current-ish)- On a lighter note, a claymation movie never hurts to add to your marathon list. This may not be the most well-known film in comparison to Coraline or The Nightmare Before Christmas but it is the only one available on this streaming service for free. This movie was released in 2005 but is worth watching over and over: From the beautiful story and amazing music it a movie that never gets old. In all honesty, I think I’ve seen it over forty times, and it never gets old. The story follows Victor, a young man who has been arranged to marry the young lady Victoria. When he is practicing his vows in the woods he accidentally marries the “corpse bride” Emily. Now Victor is trying to find a way to return to Victoria to save her from marrying another man. This a great movie for those who scare easily and want a great Tim Burton film to watch with the classic voices of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
Children of the Corn (Classic)- Released in 1984 this is another Stephen King story transformed into a movie. This movie follows Burt Stanton and his girlfriend Vicky who are trying to report a crime to the police. While trying to contact the authorities they come across a small town populated only by children. Something that at first appears innocent soon turns deadly as they need to escape these children who are trying to sacrifice them to the devil. In all honesty, I don’t remember this movie as a whole, but there is one scene that still haunts my nightmares. So, if you’re a fan of Stephen King and want a classic movie to watch Children of The Corn is perfect for you.
