What’s the Best Advice You’ve Ever Received?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Everyone can appreciate good advice, but good advice can sometimes seem hard to give.  It seems easier to face problems with a laugh or a sarcastic reply because we tend to think that the advice we give or receive has to be some long, mind-blowing speech. However, this is not the case. In reality, sometimes the most simple sentence is what blows your mind, not that long speech. But nonetheless, every and any piece of advice can end up sticking with someone, regardless of its complexity. I have received plenty of advice throughout my life, but recently, I was told something that I found to be very beneficial, and it led me to wonder what advice others have received in their lives that they really resonated with. So, I decided to ask people to tell me the best advice they’ve ever received, and because everyone can always use some solid advice, I decided to share the responses through this article, starting with my own.

Sydney: “Feelings are not facts.” I wanted to explain mine; the reason I love this piece of advice so much is because a lot of the time I would believe that the way I felt must be the way it is. If I felt dumb or unimportant, it must be because I’m dumb and unimportant, right? Of course not, that simply doesn’t make any sense. Your feelings aren’t facts!

Sophia: “Take a risk and try to be someone. If you fail, at least you can say you tried.”

Rodrigo: “Love yourself, b*tch.”

Emma O: “Don’t let other people’s emotions affect important personal decisions.”

Hazel: “The coolest person in the room is the one having the most fun.”

Hannah B: “There is no reason to be conscious about what other people are thinking of you because they are worried about what others are thinking of themselves.”

Zach: “There are three things in life that you can’t get back: time, words, and opportunities.”

Leora: “Don’t compare yourself to others; comparison is the number one thief of joy.”

Jamie: “Do something for yourself everyday.”

Hank: “Life is best for those who can make the most out of less.”

Emma W: “Don’t take things personally. Be straight forward and explain when there is miscommunication because people may be behaving a certain way because of what’s going on in their lives at the moment.”

Katie: “Do it now, save yourself from stress later.”

Kylie: “Everything happens for a reason.”

Hannah J: “Don’t do drugs. But if you’re going to, stay away from hard drugs.” (Also, “be bold!”)

Emily B: “Ask yourself if the thing you’re worrying about right now will affect you in a week, a month, or even a year. If not, don’t worry about it.”

Caiti: “Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there because you may be surprised by all of the love you will receive.”

Trinity: “You can’t convince someone of something because then you know that they can be convinced otherwise.”

Maddie: “You’re always moving forward. Whether it’s up or down, it’s still forward.”

Cheris: “Beauty is subjective to the eye.”

Chloe: “Never give up, because you never know what will happen tomorrow.”

Jillian: “You can’t control other people’s actions, but you can control your reaction to them.”

Kayla: “Be nice to everyone you meet because you never know what they are going through.”

Emily A: “Follow your f*cking heart.”

Sabine: “Always follow your own intuition. You’re the only one who knows what’s right for you.”

Anna: “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

Jacki: “Kindness begets kindness.”

Avery: “Wash a person’s feet until you know why they walk the way they do.”

Lee: “Happiness isn’t something you can achieve; you can still be happy while in the process of achieving something.”

Nicole: “Always be the bigger person and always take the high road.”

Luke: “Don’t let negative situations or negative people get to you. It’s not that they’re gone, but they simply aren’t worthy of your time.”

Mary: “This too shall pass.”

Olivia: “Never give up on your dreams because there is always someone who believes in you whether or not you believe in yourself.”

Patricia: “Holding onto hate is like you taking poison and expecting them to die.”

Ken: “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.”

Each one of these pieces of advice can be applied to our daily lives however we want it to be, and they will help different people in different ways. A lot of these are very simplistic, yet they have a deeper meaning behind them and are open to interpretation based upon the situation. Of course, just reading pieces of advice that other people have been given isn’t going to change your life; it is important that we take the advice we are given and apply it to our lives in a way that will provide us with the utmost benefit. In the end, it is up to you to use the advice you are given to enhance your life in the best way possible.
