Cutting Down on Waste in Your Beauty Routine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

It’s possible you clicked on this article because you’ve already been cutting down on waste in your life elsewhere. But maybe you’re still finding it tricky to incorporate sustainable products into an important part of your life: your beauty routine.

Cutting down on waste from your life can be hard, but it’s not impossible. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of ways to limit your trash contribution in your beauty routine.

Get Naked!

Plastic bottles that package your products are likely made from plastic that is not easily (if at all) recyclable, which means they’ll probably be sitting in a landfill for many years after you’ve tossed it out.

Instead, opt for shampoos, conditioners, lotions, soaps, etc. that are sold in a solid bar form and are naked (without packaging). These lovely alternatives even tend to last longer because they are ultra-concentrated. Taking one quick trip to LUSH Cosmetics in downtown SLO can show you just how many packaging-free options you have.

Removing Makeup Mindfully

The scary reality of using face wipes in your beauty routine is that they are indestructible. In fact, they can take 100 years to biodegrade

Luckily,  you can choose other options that are better for the environment. You could go with a washable makeup remover cloth or smaller reusable makeup remover pads instead. When it comes to buying cotton swabs to remove eye-makeup, look for options made with bamboo instead of plastic.

Invest in a Safety Razor

Throwing away one plastic razor blade after another can lead to lots of waste. Once the blade gets dull, the only option you have is to get a new one.

Fortunately, making a thoughtful investment by buying a safety razor with a stainless steel blade can help you cut down on your plastic waste. You can also buy inexpensive replacement blades, making this option more cost efficient than the original!

DIY Your Beauty Products

Shake your beauty routine up by getting creative and DIY-ing new products in your own kitchen. You could make a face mask using only three ingredients, or you could make a homemade sugar scrub in no time at all.

If you’re feeling even more adventurous to cut down on waste, you could even start using organic and minimally processed coconut oil as a makeup remover. Or you could use some quality honey as a facial cleanser for its antibacterial and moisturizing properties.

In the end, no matter which way you decide to make your beauty routine more environmentally friendly, the planet will thank you.
