For the majority of my life, I’ve been someone who absolutely could not stand fall. Being from New England, it meant rain, shorter days, and weather that was somehow simultaneously humid and freezing. It also meant the start of a probably unpleasant school year full of way too much work (yes, Mount Holyoke has been a lot of work so far, but it is work I’ve actually been interested in, so that changes things). However, I have to say, as this fall is wrapping up, it  has won me over.

Even though I do not exactly jump for joy when the cold weather rolls around, I have to admit that the colorful leaves are unbelievably beautiful (especially on Mount Holyoke’s campus!). I remember being so disappointed to see the green landscape disappear as the seasons changed, but now it is so nice to see the different shades of red, orange, and yellow covering the trees and ground. It has been so nice to take walks around Upper Lake here at Mount Holyoke and along the trail by the river in my hometown and to see the lovely scenery.

There is also nothing better than having an excuse to wear cozy sweaters, bundle up in comfy clothes, and drink some hot chocolate. I also love being able to have all the amazing “fall” foods like apple cider and apple cider donuts! Plus, there is no better time than Halloween to have an excuse to eat candy to your heart’s content. I definitely do not enjoy the lack of sunlight in the fall and winter, and no amount of cozy sweaters and colorful leaves can change that, but there is something to be said for this season after all.

This year I’ve been so lucky to truly enjoy fall and the wonderful things going along with it, despite its negatives. I guess I’ve finally been turned into a person who actually enjoys the season, rather than being someone who detested every season but summer.

I'm a first-year student at Mount Holyoke College and I am interested in majoring in English, history, or economics. I love writing, reading, exploring cool towns and cities, and listening to almost anything by Taylor Swift.
Mount Holyoke College is a gender-inclusive, historically women's college in South Hadley, MA.
