How To Contribute To Thanksgiving Dinner As A College Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

As a college student, it’s sometimes hard to feel like you’re contributing to Thanksgiving dinner when all you do is show up at home from school with all of your laundry. Here are a few easy ways to contribute and help your family.

Handle the drinks

Since I am of legal drinking age this year, I can contribute to Thanksgiving by taking care of the drinks. This can be anything from wine to whiskey to beer. Particularly this year, I bought some Jackie O’s beer that my family loves from right here in Athens, Ohio! Not only did I get to support and shop local, but I got some awesome beer out of it too!

Pie/Desserts

Another way that I will be helping out this year with Thanksgiving is by making pie! I will be making a homemade pumpkin and pecan pie. While you don’t have to go completely homemade like I have, handling the desserts is one less thing for whoever is hosting to have to handle.

Activities

If you can’t contribute food, think of some fun games that you and your family could play before or after dinner. You can also figure out how to keep younger family members occupied to give their parents a break for the day.

Providing help

Ask if there is anything that you can do to help prepare for the big day and help as much as you can.

Saying thank you

Not only should you say why you’re thankful, don’t forget to thank those who have provided this huge meal and family members who continue to support you throughout college.

Give back to others

Taking time out of your life to deliver food, donate time to a shelter, or even making a donation of canned goods is the best way to contribute to Thanksgiving when you’re lucky enough to have privileges and everything you have like family and food on the table.
