The Best Things To Do When Home For Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

When it’s finally time to go home, whether it is for a break or just a long weekend, there are certain things that you look forward to that makes your home special. From visiting your favorite restaurant or seeing your cuddly pet, being home makes things that used to be an ordinary part of your life into a special occasion. Sometimes the little things are a lot more important than you remember. With Thanksgiving break behind us, winter break is just around the corner, so these are some of the best things you can look forward to!

After endless weeks of dining hall food, you begin to get sick of eating the same thing every time or having the same options available. Everyone has their favorite homemade meal made by their parents, grandparents or a friend that could cause your mouth to water. Everyone dreams of a different savory meal that get prepared right on your stovetop. Some may say that it tastes better because of the extra ingredient of love. Whether that is the reason or not, keep your appetite open for your favorite meals when home!

Although you missed your mom’s famous pasta, you are now back near your favorite local restaurants. Every has a different spot that serves their favorite food and being away from it can be hard! Finding a balance between devouring your favorite homemade meals and meals from your favorite local spots is key when being home during break.

If you are someone who does not have a car or access to a car on campus, being able to drive again after weeks has the ability to feel awkward, yet amazing at the same time. Part of you will be overwhelmed with confusion and thinking that you forget how to drive. On the other hand, the new freedom will excite you and influence you to just drive around. You’re now able to ride around town, stroll through memory lane or just jam out in the car with your friends. Another highlight of being home is being in your own bed and room, which usually evokes a sense of relaxation.

As you and your high school friends embark on different college journeys, the best part of going home is being able to catch up. Everyone is able to bring a new story, while also creating new memories. Being home allows you to hang out with your friends, while also doing the things you love together.

Even if your parents and siblings can sometimes get on your nerve, going home to see your family feels great. Over holiday breaks, you may get bombarded with questions about college; however, seeing relatives can bring a sense of comfort. Being able to be around the people you love makes being home special!

One of the hardest parts of going to college is leaving your pets behind; however, a great part of going home is being greeted by your fluffy animal at the door. Now you can snuggle up by the fire with your pet or take them on a nature walk.
