Year after year, the Great White Way becomes home to astounding plays and musicals that New York natives and tourists alike rush to see. If you’re a theater fanatic, you probably already know which show you’re the most excited for and saving up to snag those tickets. So, what are some of the new shows we can expect to be wowed by in the upcoming 2020 season?

The Music Man

Starring Broadway veterans Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, this classic tells the story of Harold Hill, who poses as a band leader in Iowa even though he actually has no musical knowledge. While he plans to disappear once he collects money for the band from unsuspecting townspeople, he begins falling for Marian Paroo, which makes his prior plans difficult to follow through with. Before the show even had a definitive theatre, ticket sales were already through the roof and seats are very difficult to secure. The show will open at The Winter Garden in October of 2020, so grab those tickets now!

Company

Opening on March 22, this gender-bent revival will star Tony-winner and theatre legend Patti Lupone, alongside other huge talents including Tony and Grammy winner Katrina Lenk, Christopher Fitzgerald, Christopher Sieber, Matt Doyle, Greg Hildreth, Claybourne Elder, Kyle Dean Massey and Bobby Conte Thornton. The original 1970s story will be changed to be more reflective of the 21st century, but the classic award-winning songs like Ladies Who Lunch, You Could Drive a Person Crazy and Being Alive remain on the stage of the Bernard B. Jacobs theatre.

West Side Story

Opening on February 6th, 2020 at the Broadway Theatre, this timely masterpiece returns to Broadway in a totally reimagined way. Tony Award winning Ivan Van hove directs this contemporary version of the show, which strays from the original famous choreography by the iconic Jerome Robbins, and even decided to cut the famously-known I Feel Pretty and the Somewhere ballet. Just as relevant as during its original release more than 60 years ago, the timeless love story explores social, political and racial tensions by way of a moving score and dance stylings of the acclaimed Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker.

Six

Fresh off the West End, the Olivier-winning story of Henry VIII’s wives is set to officially open on March 12th, 2020 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, this show is an exhilarating concert-style musical that consists of a pop score that’s sure to have you moving in your seat along with the talented and electrifying ladies on the stage.

It’s sure to be an exciting season for Broadway as these are a mere few of the highly anticipated pieces preparing to take the stage come 2020. You can expect shows with a high level of talent and star power that will blow you away and introduce some fresh takes on old classics you can’t help but love. Mark your calendars and be sure to secure those tickets because audiences are already abuzz with excitement, and you don’t want to miss out on what is sure to be a Broadway season for the books!
