Six Ways to Save Your Skin This Winter Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montevallo chapter.

When you think of winter, a few negative things come to mind; weight gain, seasonal depression, and yes, dry skin. Winter can wreak total havoc on your skin and even in warmer climates such as Alabama, it’s still important to prioritize a well-kept routine. This season, with a little help from an upgraded skincare routine, your skin can not only survive the cold but thrive in it. Here are a few of my best tips and product recommendations for caring for your skin this season.

Hydration is Key

During the winter, consider investing in a humidifier to keep your skin hydrated. Alternating between a heated indoor space and a chilly walk to class can leave your skin feeling confused and dried out. Using a humidifier is a great reset for your skin.

Hot Showers are a No Go

While you may be tempted to perform an opera in a long steamy shower, hot water actually dries your skin by stripping it of its natural oils. According to an interview with Dr. Emily McKenzie conducted by the University of Utah, taking quick lukewarm showers is a recipe for happy skin this winter season.

Gentle Fragrance Free Products

When you use the wrong kind of soap, it can further irritate or dry out your skin. I swear by a gently moisturizing body wash such as Dove’s Body Wash.

For my face, I like to use Cetaphil. I have dry skin and Cetaphil is a perfect daily cleanser that is easy and convenient. I use this every morning to start my facial skin care with a clean slate, especially on days I wear makeup.

Say No to Makeup Wipes

As far as removing makeup goes, I’ve come to discover recently that makeup wipes typically make my skin very oily. Instead of wipes, I’ve started to use micellar cleansing water. It’s a cleanser and makeup remover in one and it is surprisingly powerful. It does the job so well without leaving a residue and it leaves me feeling refreshed.

Moisturizer is Your New BFF

I cannot stress enough how important moisturizer is in general, but I use it daily from the months of December to February. I like to use a moisturizer with SPF during the daytime like CeraVe, and at night, I like to go with a lighter one that doesn’t clog my pores. I typically use Neutrogena’s Natural Multi-Vitamin Nourishing Night cream.

This winter, spruce up your daily skincare routine and remeber skincare goes further than your face and deeper than the surface of vanity…it’s self care!
