It’s no secret that now, more than ever, it is important that each person is doing their part to protect the planet and stay green. Being sustainable in college can seem to be hard because a) most alternative, sustainable resources are expensive and sometimes hard to find and b) people don’t want to sacrifice the products they already know and love. Sustainability isn’t about being perfect and eco-friendly 100% of the time, it’s about taking those small steps to help the planet as much as possible. Luckily for you, I’ve created this beginner’s guide full of tips and tricks to help turn your thumb just a little bit greener.

One of the easiest ways to start being sustainable is to opt for non-plastic products. This might seem difficult, but there are actually so many plastic alternatives these days! One of the places to start is swapping your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one. I personally love Mable toothbrushes. Not only are they eco-friendly and reasonably priced, but they also give back to their local community schools and teach kids how to be more sustainable.

Another easy plastic-swap is to buy a reusable water bottle and coffee mug. Plastic water bottles are a thing of the past and have no place in 2020 so invest in a cute one and thank me later! Plastic storage bags also cause a lot more harm than good so purchasing a pack of reusable bags to use for produce and food storage is an easy way to help the planet out.

People don’t often think about clothing when it comes to sustainability. Did you know that the dyes from clothing in landfills run off and can damage the land, as well as adding more unnecessary waste? One way to combat this problem is by thrifting clothes rather than purchasing new ones. A great way to do this is by shopping at your local thrift stores, like cute ones at Railroad Square! You can also thrift from the comfort of your home thanks to ThredUp, an online thrift store with the best selection for the best prices.

Learning and practicing how to properly recycle based on your area is also super important and is an easy first step to being more sustainable. For instance, did you know you can’t recycle cardboard pizza boxes? Or that you can’t recycle plastic utensils and the caps to bottles? These are all small things that go a long way because knowing how to properly recycle makes the process that much easier and efficient. Find out exactly what you can and can’t recycle in Tallahassee right here.

Being more sustainable is as easy as doing some research and finding the different ways you can be more eco-friendly in your day-to-day life. Sustainability doesn’t always have to equal giving up the products you know and love, it’s all about finding the alternative swaps that work for you and the planet.
