As the first month of 2020 comes to a close and we continue on with the decade, I feel it’s important we reflect on the highlights and phenomena that 2019 has brought to us. Unless you’ve been living in the dark, a lot of you will know and appreciate all these joys 2019 has provided throughout the year. With the year at a fast start, it’s easy to forget all the amazing things that happened in 2019. You may not have the time to reflect and reminisce about something that was “so last year”…SO allow me to do it for you!

Best Meme from 2019:

This one was a difficult category to just focus on one specific one and I wanted to make sure this wasn’t just me showing off my own favorite meme. I dug through the very depths of the internet and I am pleased to say I bring to you the meme that influenced us all in 2019.

According to Buzzfeed’s top memes of the year, this was one of the top ones premiering back in May of 2019. While the captions on this meme varied, no matter what it was, it still remained very funny.

Best Song of 2019:

If you didn’t know the answer to this one then I wonder where you’ve been all year. This song remained at #1 on the Billboard top 100 for a record-breaking 19 weeks, making it the longest running number one song in history. It is…Duh Duh Duh DUUUHHH!

“Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus

If you didn’t blast this song on repeat through your cars speakers while simultaneously ruining them at the same time, did you really experience 2019?

Best Movie of 2019:

This one is a no brainer as well. This movie grossed over $858,373,000 world wide and beat out “Avatar” as the number one movie of all time. Fans went crazy over this movie as it was the end to a series expanding over 11 years and 21 films. Still don’t know what it is?

“Avengers: Endgame”

To many people, this was the end of a legacy and left many major fans heartbroken. It’s no wonder this film rose to the number one movie of 2019 and of all time!

Best Netflix Show of 2019:

There seems to be some sort of craze over thriller and murder mystery shows. With “Making a Murderer” and the Ted Bundy documentary paving the way, these shows are opening the doors to put an understanding to the madness. Now this has been a show I have recommended to a lot of people…that show is called

“Mindhunter”

This show, set in the 1970’s, follows FBI agents and how they coined the term “serial killer,” and sought to understand whether they are born or made. This suspenseful show hits the ground running from the very beginning. It’s definitely a grotesque, nail-biter but it has an astounding 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Depending on what articles you read, some rank this show as number one; some rank other shows like “Stranger Things” or “Lucifer” as number one. I still stand by what I said. I feel “Mindhunter” does deserve the title of number 1 show on Netflix in 2019.

Best Slang Word of 2019:

For this one, it also depends on what website you look at so I am going to give you the top 3 for this one. Business Insider ranks the words like: flexGOAT, and tea as being some of the most used words for Gen Z-ers and Milennials in 2019. For those of you who do not know what flexGOAT, and tea mean, let me enlighten you. Flex simply means showing off. As used in a sentence: “weird flex but okay” or “he bought Airpods so he could rich flex to his friends.” For those of you who don’t know what GOAT means, it means the Greatest of All Time. In a sentence, it would be used as “Michael Jordan was the GOAT” or “OBJ is the GOAT.” Lastly, we have the word tea. This is another word for gossip, so when someone says “spill the tea,” they mean “share the gossip.” Whether this is a true top list of slang words from 2019, I’m not 100% sure about that. I would say words more like bet and yeet are probably my personal top 2 words used this past year, but I can’t argue with Business Insider.

Best Viral Post of 2019:

This is my last aspect of 2019 that I’d like to reflect on. Many posts on Instagram reach a level of fame that only the average user, like you or me that have under 1K followers, can only dream of. However, very few posts can reach the level of being able to say they went “viral.” So let us not forget that 2019 was the year that “the Egg” Instagram post went viral. For those of you who don’t remember what the Egg was…here it is:

Not sure how or why this reached an insane amount of attention on Instagram…but it did….and that sums up the bizarre world we live in. How an Egg can get 53 million likes on Instagram and my family photos can only get a total of 3 likes is beyond me. Not going to lie though, I was one of the 53 million that liked this post.

Now that we’ve covered almost every nostalgic aspect of 2019, it is crucial we look forward to the bizarre, viral posts and trending memes 2020 has to offer us. In all honesty, 2020 has kicked it off with the presentation of baby Yoda, so I think 2020 is already off to a great start. Until next time, I’m outtie like a belly button…maybe that sentence will catch on. Hoping to start my own trend here.
