As the Academy Awards loom ahead of us in early February, I thought it would be the perfect time to spotlight an entertainment company that has produced many critically-acclaimed films throughout the past few years.
Founded in 2012, A24 has become a powerhouse film production and distribution company with hits like 2017 Oscar-winner Moonlight. Additionally, they have developed and maintained working relationships with some of Hollywood’s youngest and most diverse writers, actors and directors. Have you seen Euphoria on HBO starring Zendaya? That’s an A24 production. Remember the raunchy and wild Selena Gomez and James Franco film Spring Breakers? It was distributed by A24 in 2013. Even though it didn’t win, the beloved coming-of-age movie Lady Bird was nominated for five Academy Awards in 2017 and was released by A24 as well. Clearly, this company is doing something right!
This year A24 has had another successful bout at the box offices. With memorable movies like Midsommar (July 2019), The Lighthouse (October 2019) and Uncut Gems (December 2019), they have once again proven that even though their brand is less than a decade old, they are more than capable of making fantastic films. The Lighthouse garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography, and, although Uncut Gems did not receive any nods from the Academy this year, critics and moviegoers alike thought it was completely snubbed…and I agree!
