How to Survive Valentine’s Day as a Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Did you miss cuffing season and now have become frantic because the most dreaded holiday is coming up? Well, Valentine’s Day does not have to be as awful as people describe it to be. Here are a few tips to avoid sitting in your room crying and reminiscing about a love that you have never had.

1. Find Other Single Friends and have Galentine’s Day

Even though Galentine’s Day is typically observed on February 13, you can go out with your friends on February 14. Afterall, this is your Valentine’s Day you so you to make all the rules. You and your close friends can dress up and go out to your favorite restaurant. Valentine’s Day is a day full of love, therefore all love is accepted on this day. So, grab your very best girlfriends and have a night filled with friendships and laughs.

2. Please stay away from your sad boy playlists

It might be easy to turn on Drake’s Marvin’s Room or James Arthur’s Say You Won’t Let Go, but those songs are only going to make you feel worse. On February 14, avoid those sad songs that put you in your feelings. Instead, put on your favorite songs that make you feel like you are on top of the world. For example, Nicki Minaj’s Feeling Myself can always make you feel as if you do not need anybody else in this world except yourself.

3. Avoid your ex’s social media

This should be a given but some of us need to be reminded that stalking your ex’s social media is not a good idea; especially if you know they are spending Valentine’s Day with someone else. Someone needs to hear it so I’m going to say it, avoid all contact with your ex on Valentine’s Day. No matter how lonely you are feeling or how accessible they are, they are your ex for a reason.

4. Treat yourself

If you are worried about seeing everyone else around you receiving gifts from their significant others, here’s a simple solution to avoid any potential jealousy. Treat yourself. Treat yourself to those chocolate-covered strawberries. Treat yourself to that bouquet of roses. Valentine’s Day is not just for love between couples but it can also be celebrated with self-love. Why must you wait around for people to give you items that you have always wanted? This 2020 treat yourself to that heart-shaped pizza and box of chocolate. You deserve it!

It does not matter if you are newly single or have been single your entire life, let’s not sit and mope about the love you currently do not have. Nothing is wrong with spending Valentine’s Day single. Just remember that someone would be lucky as cheese to have you as a Valentine.
