Changing Your Wardrobe for the New Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

It’s a new year which means a new start for you to focus on yourself. A great way to help yourself feel good and inspired is to change up your wardrobe. If you’ve been wearing the same type of clothes for a while you may start to feel a little bored or uninspired. However, changing up your look can bring you confidence which is always a good thing to have, especially when starting a new year. Here are some tips to help you to keep an open mind when changing up your wardrobe!

1. Go to the rack you would usually avoid.

If you wear the same type of clothes every day then you’ll usually go to racks that have that style. You know you like those clothes and that you’ll wear them a lot so why not get them? Well, by doing this your wardrobe is probably going to start looking very similar. By looking at other items that you normally wouldn’t, you’ll realize that you actually can find things that you like that also look different from your wardrobe but complement it.

2. Try on different styles and colors.

When shopping you probably see things that you think are cute but you don’t think you would really wear so you just walk past them. However, this time when you go shopping try on those items. Also, if you find things that you’re a little iffy on, try those on too. And try them on in a color you don’t normally wear. You may be pleasantly surprised by what the clothes look like on you and how the colors complement  you. I’ve gone shopping with many different friends and made them do this and they usually end up leaving with things they would have never picked out themselves. They also seem super confident when wearing them.

3. Accessorize your outfits differently.

You can even change your wardrobe with the clothes you already have, just wear them differently than you normally would. Change up the jewelry you normally wear with an outfit or throw on a scarf instead of a necklace. It can be as simple as putting on a headband or a belt and the outfit instantly looks more put together. Don’t be afraid to try something new.

4. Make sure you’re comfortable.

The most important step in all of this is to stay true to yourself and make sure you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing. There’s no point in changing your look if you aren’t going to be happy with it. You can try new pieces that still represent the type of person you are and how you like to dress.

The phrase “new year new me” doesn’t mean you have to become a completely different person, you just want to be a better version of yourself. Bring that into your fashion and you will feel and look great.
