Self-Love Songs for When You’re Feeling Insecure

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. It’s alright if you’ve got no one to take you on a fancy date, because this year we’re focusing on loving and taking care of ourselves! Feeling a little insecure? Not to worry, that happens to everyone sometimes. That’s why I’ve assembled a playlist of songs that’ll help you remember what a beautiful, wonderful and altogether great human being you are! Listen to these songs and you’re guaranteed to radiate with confidence in no time!

1. Strip by Little Mix

These girls have gone through a lot of bullying and body shaming in their lives and now they want to remind you that you are beautiful no matter what shape or size your body is and whether you are wearing makeup or not. “Jiggle all this weight, yeah, you know I love all of this. Finally love me naked, sexiest when I’m confident!” Follow Little Mix’ advice and say yes to body positivity!

2. Born This Way by Lady GaGa

The message of this song is clear: I was born this way and I don’t want to change a thing because I’m perfect just like this. Anyone disagreeing isn’t worth listening to. “Don’t hide yourself in regret, just love yourself, and you’re set!

3. Respect by Aretha Franklin

Aretha demands to be respected and so should you! If we all treated each other with R-E-S-P-E-C-T, the world would be a much better place. And besides, this song is so catchy! “(Just a little bit) A little respect…

4. Confident by Demi Lovato

What’s wrong with being, what’s wrong with being, what’s wrong with being confident?” Absolutely nothing! You’re talented and capable and you should show it to everyone. This is one of my favourite power anthems!

5. Beautiful by Christina Aguilera

This song goes out to everyone, who has ever been told that they’re worth less than they actually are. If somebody tells you you’re not beautiful or worthy, don’t you listen to them for a second! Always remember Christina’s advice: “I am beautiful no matter what they say!

6. thank u, next by Ariana Grande

Going through a breakup can be extremely painful, but it doesn’t need to make you bitter. Ariana shows us a great example by thanking all her exes and remembering how each of them made her a better person: “One taught me love, one taught me patience and one taught me pain, now I’m so amazing!” You’ll do yourself a favor by thanking your exes instead of hating them, it’s no fun being bitter forever.

7. Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars

When I see your face there’s not a thing that I would change ’cause you’re amazing just the way you are.” This is a great piece of advice for all our lives. Even though you may not always see it, you really are perfect just like that and you don’t need to change anything about yourself for anyone else. If you’re ever feeling insecure, listen to this song and imagine Bruno singing it just for you.

8. Sexy and I Know It by LMFAO

LMFAO most definitely know they’re sexy and they aren’t afraid to sing about it. And neither should you be! No matter what kind of body you have it is sexy, and you deserve to feel good about it! So put this song on replay and “wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle” that gorgeous bod’!

9. i by Kendrick Lamar

When the whole world throws dirt at you, loving yourself can be a revolutionary act. In this song Kendrick sings about the structural oppression he and other black people face for example in the form of racism and police brutality. He, however, refuses to be repressed and instead fights back by loving and appreciating himself even more. “So many motherf*ckers wanna down me but an enemigo never drown me.” A powerful lesson to learn.

10. Stronger by Kelly Clarkson

Kelly shows us that no matter what struggles you’re facing now, you WILL get through them and you WILL come out stronger than ever before. Whether it’s a breakup or something else, you got what it takes to overcome anything that’s thrown your way. When things get rough, listen to this song and remember: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!

11. Dancing Queen by Abba

I love to put this song on replay and just dance with my friends, or alone if they’re not around. No matter if you’re in the club or your own bedroom, this song makes you feel… Well, like a “dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen”. So, get ready to show your best moves and start jiving! This is a feel-good anthem if there ever was one!

12. Can I Get an Amen by RuPaul

This song is about not letting the world bring you down and pursuing your dreams no matter what. Even though there may be some people who make fun of you, don’t be discouraged. Like the queen of drag RuPaul herself says “don’t let the weight of the world flatten your weave, just tease it out, turn Adam to Eve.” There’s nothing that a glamorous dress and a fabulous makeup can’t fix!
