Do you know when you’re clicking through Netflix trying to find a background show that is
interesting enough to entertain you as you look up once in a while from that essay you’re
trying to write, but not good enough that it distracts you? Well, that pretty much describes my
relationship with Netflix 80% of the time and last Saturday, I spent a good 45 minutes trying to
find the perfect background show…… I failed miserably.
Well, it was a loss for my essay but not for me, because I came across the love child of two of
my favorite shows: ‘This is us’ and ‘Glee’. The name of the show is Soundtrack and it might
be one of the coolest things I’ve discovered since Hamilton (not as great as Hamilton, but you
know what I mean).
The first 30 minutes of the first episode, I really thought this was going to be any other musical
rom-com. Except the characters were lip-syncing popular songs so I wasn’t really super
impressed like they legit weren’t even singing. There isn’t much I can say without giving away
the biggest plot twist ever, but trust me- it is not your basic romantic comedy, I was legit crying
by the end of the first episode.
Do you know how in This is Us, the show shifts between 100 different timelines and it weaves
together the past, present, and future in this beautiful and exceptional way? If you answered
no, literally stop reading this article AND GO WATCH ‘THIS IS US’, you freaking weirdo. If you
answered yes, then you are probably already typing up ‘Soundtrack’ on the search bar on
Netflix.
‘Soundtrack’ has everything. Music, drama, romance, comedy, shock-value- I mean it is
literally like a millennial vomited all of their favorite things on a tv show.
If that last sentence didn’t convince you to watch it, I don’t know what will.
