The Ultimate Galentine’s Day Movie Marathon – With Snack and Wine Pairings!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Galentine’s Day (for those who don’t know) is the official holiday dedicated to all the ladies and their very best gal pals. Typically, it takes place on the day before Valentine’s Day (February 13) but for anyone who might not have plans on the 14th, you can celebrate on that day too. Many of us have seen what it’s like to get romantic with your significant other on this special day: fancy dinner, cute little gifts and whatever may come after. But what about getting romantic with your girls? The ones that are there for you all year round…we need to celebrate them too!

My ultimate Galentine’s Day requires copious amounts of wine, snacks and the very best chick flick movie marathon. So gather around, ladies – grab your comfiest clothes, your softest blankets and your favourite girls because I’ve comprised a list of my top movies that will have you and your friends laughing and crying and laugh-crying all in the same wave. Each movie suggestion comes with its own snack and wine pairing. Take a look!

1. Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (2005)

This movie follows the lives of four friends – Tibby, Lena, Carmen and Bridget – during their summer vacation. They spend the summer doing their own thing, but before they go their separate ways, they find a pair of pants that fits them all perfectly and the pants become the ultimate symbol of their friendship. This film really goes to show that no matter where you end up, your girls will always have your back.

Best quote: “Don’t talk to me. I’m tired and grumpy and I’ll probably make fun of you.”

Snack: DIY Pink Popcorn

Wine: Pinot Grigio

2. Someone Great (2019)

This one hits different. Someone Great is a (hilarious) rom-com that focuses on the hardships of a breakup, including the feelings of loss and growth that come with it and ultimately the bond of female friendship. Jenny, the main character, is faced with a devastating break up after a nine-year relationship. Before she moves across the country to start a new job, her friends Erin and Blair vow to take her on one last adventure through New York and it really shows us that your best friends are there no matter what. Also, Lizzo made her musical debut in this movie so bonus points for that!

Best quote: “You’ve been blessed with a broken heart. When it doesn’t hurt anymore, that’s when it’s really over. Live in this as long as you can.”

Snack: Nachos

Wine: Red Sangria

3. Pitch Perfect (2012)

This movie is a perfect example of sisters before misters. Becca, a freshman in university, joins her school’s female-only acapella group. Reluctant at first, she gets closer with the girls throughout the movie as they work their way up to the biggest competition of the year. You can’t help but fall in love with the quirkiness of this girl group (long live Rebel Wilson, am I right ladies?), and with its witty dialogue it’ll leave you and your friends with a good laugh.

Best quote: “Yeah, don’t put me down for cardio.”

Snack: Pretzel bites

Wine: Moscato

4. Girl’s Trip (2017)

I was skeptical about this one at first because it seemed redundant to movies like Think Like a Man (2012) and About Last Night (2014), but I must say that this one had me howling. It was undeniably hilarious. Each one of the characters is comical and eccentric in their own way and definitely relatable to someone in your own friend group (that’s the best part about it). The peeing scene…I really cannot contain myself during that part.

Best quote: “We’re about to make memories that we can laugh about for the rest of our lives.”

Snack: S’mores Dip

Wine: Pinot Noir

5. The Other Woman (2014)

Some things should not go together, but sometimes they just do (see my snack recommendation). This movie is the epitome of just that, as it brings together three women all seeing the same guy: the wife, the girlfriend and the young mistress. They band together to get revenge and end up becoming best friends along the way. Leslie Mann plays the same character-type in pretty much every movie she’s in, yet never fails to disappoint.

Best quote: “We got played by the same guy…do you want vodka or tequila?”

Snack: Chicago mix

Wine: Cabernet Sauvignon

6. Wine Country (2019)

Let’s be real – anything with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey on the same screen is absolutely genius. In this film, six friends head over to Napa Valley to celebrate a 50th birthday. The alcohol starts flowing and they hit a few rough patches along the way. However, at the end of the day, if wine and paella can’t bring a group of women together, I’m not sure what will.

*Starts singing Eternal Flame*

Best quote: “Sure, sometimes I want to tell this one to f**k off…that’s what intimacy looks like!”

Snack: Charcuterie board (duh!)

Wine: Zinfandel

7. Bridesmaids (2011)

Quite honestly, I’ve saved the best for last. I’ve watched this movie countless times over the last nine years and seriously, it kills me every time. The dress-fitting scene, the plane scene, the bridal party scene, the tennis playing scene…need I say more? If you haven’t watched this movie with your girl group then I’m not sure what you’re waiting for. Deep down, we are all Annie. Nine years later and I still refer to this movie at least once a week.

Best quote: let’s be real, I can’t pick just ONE.

Snack: ‘Drunken’ strawberries

Wine: Girls’ Night Out

There you have it – my ultimate Galentine’s Day movie marathon, complete with snacks and wine. Single or not, a girl’s night is always appreciated and these movies are relatable to anyone. Galentine’s Day is all about the love you have for your girls and the connections that come with true friendship. These movies are perfect for emphasizing the importance of female bonds and will make you want to hug each one of your girlfriends!
