On Feb 2, 2020, The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers with a final score of 31-20. The Super Bowl was held in Miami, Florida at Hard Rock Stadium which is a long way from home for both teams. Winning the 54th Super Bowl is monumental for the Chiefs franchise and for their city. The team had not been in the Super Bowl in 50 years, leaving the city in disappointment year after year. However, this year ended with a different outcome.
The 24-year-old quarterback Patrick Mahomes carried the team the entire season. Mahomes is the youngest player in NFL history to win MVP (Most Valuable Player) and a Super Bowl. The many challenges the team had faced over the years made this moment even sweeter for them. In the 2019 AFC championship game, the Chiefs let their ticket to the Super Bowl slip out of their hands, after a loss to the New England Patriots. This year, they redeemed themselves and defeated the Tennessee Titans in the conference game. The Chiefs coach, Andy Reid held his very own Lombardi trophy for the first time after 21 seasons of being in the league, as a head coach. Many say this win was his ticket to being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Reid is known for being a very calm and collected coach and will be rewarding himself after this big win by eating a double cheeseburger.
Many people, even their own fans, doubted the Chiefs would ever bring home a Super Bowl win again. While several mistakes were made in the first three-quarters of the game, the team continued to stay focused. According to CNN, Mahomes says “We kept believing. That’s what we did all postseason. I felt like if we were down by 10, we weren’t playing our best football. The guys really stepped up. They believed in me.” For the people that counted the Red Kingdom out, they made sure to prove them wrong. This win is huge for Kansas City and they will celebrate this victory in a parade and rally throughout the city Wednesday, Feb 5, 2020.
