Valentine’s Day is finally here and love is in the air. This year, I thought it would be fun to hear about the romantic experiences of others. So, I asked 3 Bruins to share their favorite stories about their first Valentine’s. Hopefully these memories will make your heart flutter as much as they did mine:

Arianna’s Secret Admirer

“Sophomore year of high school, I was talking to one of my friends that I met in an English class. We were not very close yet, but we would talk here and there. I mentioned how I thought that Valentine’s Day was one of the worst holidays because you see everyone being all lovey while you are single, and he told me I should think of it in a different way. Later that week on Valentine’s Day, my doorbell rang, but no one was there when I opened it. Instead, I saw a large box of chocolates with a post-it note on it. It read, ‘I heard you hate Valentine’s Day, so hopefully this makes you hate it a little less. Happy Valentine’s Day.’ When I looked up, I saw someone driving off on a motorcycle. I knew the friend that I previously talked to had a motorcycle, so I connected the dots. I asked him that evening if he was the one who dropped off the chocolates, and he said yes. He said he wanted me to have the best day possible because I deserved it. Now we are dating. Never doubt persistent men.”

Siena’s Classic Date

“I got my license on February 8, 2016, and you know how you are not supposed to drive other people for an entire year after you get your license? Well, my parents were strict about that, so I waited an entire year to drive him, which ended up coinciding perfectly with our first Valentine’s Day. We had been ‘dating’ for 10 months but had not really gone on an official date like that (on our first date, our friends had to drop us off and pick us up). So I picked him up, and we were still nervous around each other. We ordered a large popcorn and had no appetite for dinner. But on our second Valentine’s Day, he came to visit me in LA, and we took the bus for an hour and a half to get to Echo Park and ride the pedal boats. It was really cute and honestly the most date-like thing we have ever done. I felt like I was in Cheetah Girls 3.”

Arianne’s Surprise Dinner

“This was Valentine’s Day of my senior year. He invited me to come over but said that I had to be there specifically at 5:20 pm. I was confused but made sure to be there at that time. He told me to wear something nice, so I came in a black dress, and he welcomed me into his home- also dressed up with a dress shirt, slacks and even down to the shoes! He wanted me to come at 5:20 pm because that’s when the sun was to set that day, and he actually prepared dinner for us to eat in his backyard. It was a beautiful candlelit dinner for two, and there were about 12 small tea light candles and tulips for me as the centerpiece. He even made a nice backdrop for us to block out the rest of the backyard. He had a huge speaker that played a playlist of both of our favorite songs. It all seemed so perfect because he also prepared one of my favorite dishes: fettuccini alfredo. It was such a special moment, and no one has ever done anything so thoughtful and kind for me. One of the best moments from that night, though, was when a napkin caught on fire during our dinner, and we had to put it out on the floor with the water in our fancy wine glasses.”

I absolutely loved hearing these romantic stories, these girls lived out my rom com dreams. While we can all appreciate being single and hanging with the girls on Valentine’s Day, there is definitely no harm in indulging in your hopeless romantic side too. So whether you are planning on going on a romantic date with a significant other or dancing the night away with friends this Valentine’s Day, enjoy your night and make it one for the books.
