Boy Advice I Give My Friends (That I Should Really Start Following)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

Throughout my life, I’ve always been the one who my friends ask for advice on their boy problems (which I find kind of funny considering I’ve never had a boyfriend. But hey, coaches don’t play). I always seem to be telling my friends to be strong and independent, to put themselves first, and to never let a boy treat them poorly. However, I’ve recently realized how hypocritical I actually am when it comes to giving this advice; it’s definitely easier said than done. So, I’ve decided that I’m actually going to try and start following my own advice when navigating the confusing and complicated world of college boys:

1. If he constantly makes you feel like “????” he’s not the one.

If he truly liked you and wanted to be with you, he would make sure you knew it. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but if he’s always playing mind games with you, he’s just that: a player. Take the mixed signals as a no. The right one won’t confuse you!

2. If he seems too good to be true, he probably is :(

Nobody is perfect, and this definitely goes for college boys as well. Don’t put him on a pedestal, believing that he can’t do anything wrong. And never get so caught up in your feelings for him that you become blind to his faults and notice yourself putting up with his shitty behavior. You deserve way better.

3. Never ignore red flags.

If you find yourself constantly making excuses for him time and time again and you’re overlooking major red flags, take your rose-colored glasses off and have another look at the situation. If something feels off, then it is. It’s as simple as that.

4. One-sided relationships are never the move.

Are you always the one initiating conversations, dishing out compliments, or trying to make plans to hang out and there’s no reciprocity on his end? Then it’s probably time to let him go. He clearly doesn’t want to put in the same amount of effort as you do, so why bother? Don’t waste your time and energy on someone who won’t appreciate it and definitely doesn’t deserve it.

5. Focus on yourself!!!

Self-care and self-love are extremely important, especially in these types of situations. Make sure to always put yourself first and to never settle. The boy you’re currently crying over probably won’t matter in a year, but you’re with yourself for a lifetime. Protect your heart and remember that you have so much love to give. Don’t worry, he’ll realize what he missed out on eventually. But by then you’ll have already moved on to bigger and better things. You’re gonna be alright, girl. Trust me.
