The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia Review

The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia is a new show that recently premiered on Netflix. It is about a teenage girl called Ashley Garcia (Paulina Chavez) who is the youngest person ever to receive a Ph.D. After receiving her Ph.D., Ashley moves in with her Tío Victor (Jencarlos Canela), a football coach, to be closer to her job at the Jet Propulsion Lab building robots for NASA. After she moves back to Pasadena, Ashley is reunited with her best friend Brooke (Bella Podaras) and meets new friends and love-interests.

Ashley Garcia is a super-smart Latina who uses her knowledge to solve her problems. Throughout the first season, Ashley, with the help of her friend Brook, is trying to get her first kiss from Tad (Connor Husting). But, Ashley backs off when Tad gets back together with his on-and-off girlfriend Bella (Haley Pullos). In the meantime, Ashley throws herself into her work improving algorithms and robots that could one day be essential to humans going to Mars.

By the end of the series, Ashley Garcia has demonstrated that she is a normal teenager with abnormal intelligence. This show demonstrates comedy with Ashley’s interactions with other characters like Brooke or Stick (Reed Horstmann). Taking place in L.A., Ashley Garcia also recognizes the history of the Chicano Movement and the contributions Chicanos have made in California. The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia is a fresh take on the sitcom model that introduces new and different perspectives about a genius Latina.
