The Best Dressed of the Oscars 2020

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

The 2020 Oscars were held on Sunday, February 9 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. This year had many different fashion moments on the red carpet before the show started. The following list is what I consider to be one of the best fashion trends for this year.

Maya Rudolph

The 47-year-old actress made a bold choice this year in her outfit while attending the 92nd Academy Awards. In a loose copper sequin Valentino dress accompanied with green earrings, Rudolph managed to turn heads on the red carpet. The look was modest and sophisticated but also fun with the large amount of sparkle in the outfit. Rudolph’s green jewelry was a notable trend on the red carpet and was adorned by other actresses and filmmakers was well.

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman and Maya Rudolph shared one thing in their fashion choices of the night: capes. In a black and gold Dior dress, Portman made a political statement about the apparent snub of nominations for female directors. Some controversy stirred about the cape, pointing out Portman’s lack of work with other female directors, but Portman shared her own experience that any films she had tried to work on with female directors were “ghost history.”  Portman noted that the process of getting female-directed films is hard, and she is bringing awareness to it. It also helps to do it in style with the Dior dress.

Gal Gadot

Wonder Woman herself channeled Audrey Hepburn in this gorgeous Givenchy dress. The dress’s top half is black and lacy paired with a vibrant pink tulle skirt. Accented with a diamond necklace, Gadot looked like an old Hollywood starlet on the red carpet.

Regina King

Last year’s supporting actress winner Regina King came back this year to present the award for best supporting actor. King came back with grace in a blush pink silk Versace gown that had silver details across the torso. King also kept up with the cape trend and had a half cape drape off of her in a train that accentuated her figure. She accessorized with a variety of rings on her fingers and looked positively radiant.

Kaitlyn Dever

The Booksmart star wowed the red carpet in a Louis Vuitton dress that matched the carpet itself. The red dress sparkled with beading and clung to Dever’s form beautifully.  The 23-year-old actress matched the dress with a large red shawl to drape across her arms. Booksmart may have not received any nominations, but this look is a winner in our list!

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron, who was nominated for best actress for her role in Bombshell, showed up to the Academy Awards in a sleek black Dior dress with a thigh-baring slit. The look itself was extremely polished with minimalist diamond jewelry to accentuate it. The dress flared out at the waist to give the illusion it was a two-piece outfit, and one of the straps was draped over Theron’s shoulder. The dress seemingly channeled ancient Greek fashion. With a long black train to follow behind her, Theron looked like a goddess that night.

Saoirse Ronan

The Little Women and Ladybird actress returned to the Oscars in a big statement, carrying on trends that had been seen throughout the night. The actress, who is now the second-youngest four-time nominee, was seen in a Gucci dress that was black at the top and flared out at the waist with creme colored ruffles. Past the waist was a long periwinkle skirt that went into a train. Ronan accessorized with a little green bee hair clip and diamond jewelry. The top half of the dress was recycled from a previous look, and the actress received praise for being sustainable. This look was seen as a little too bold among critics, but overall is one of the most memorable looks of the night.

Gam Wichayanee

Gam Wichayanee sang “Into the Unknown,” along with the melody of Elsa’s, at the Oscars. The singer looked like she stepped off of a Disney set, turning heads with her beautiful ombre chiffon gown. Her gown grabbed the attention of many people who were not familiar with her.  It was truly a Cinderella moment for the singer.

Cynthia Evrio

Cynthia Evrio dazzled the red carpet as she arrived in a white Versace gown. The gown was a ballroom style dress with a thigh-high slit. The dress had one strap to wrap across Evrio’s shoulder and had silver detailing across the torso. To go with the dress was a large assortment of rings and statement earrings with yellow jewels. The actress, who was nominated for best actress for the title role in Harriet, shined as bright as her diamonds as she later also performed “Stand Up,” for the Oscars crowd.

Brie Larson

The Captain Marvel star wowed audiences as she arrived at the Oscars in a nude pink Celine dress. The dress perfectly complemented Larson’s physique in a way that was glamorous but not too shocking. She carried the trends that had been seen throughout the night with the gown’s pink color, cape and subtle sparkle. The cape slid gracefully off of Larson’s shoulder with an exposed back. The dress also had a thigh-high slit and was paired with minimalist silver jewelry. The gown was made perfectly for the actress, in the way that the dress wasn’t wearing her, but she was wearing the dress instead.
