Five Essential Podcasts by Women That You Need to Listen to

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

If you ever find yourself a little bored when walking to a lecture, grocery shopping or you just have some time to kill, a podcast could be the answer. Whilst the last few years have seen a rise in their popularity and creation, this does come with the overwhelming task of finding a podcast to listen to that you truly enjoy. To help you out, here are five podcasts hosted by women that you can listen to and love.

Girl Cult

Girl Cult originally started off as a music festival and eventually ventured into an amazing podcast series. Through interviewing some of the most followed influencers of the moment, Los Angeles based young businesswoman Lexie Jay and her guests share how they have found success online – demonstrating how they are far more than just a pretty face. Aside from the interviews, Lexie also has a few solo episodes where she discusses topics such as being unapologetic in your work and personal life, and the impact of social media on your relationships.

Kalyn Nicholson’s Coffee Talks

With almost 1.5 million YouTube subscribers, Kalyn Nicholson has found huge success through her videos that centre around positivity, organisation and staying true to yourself. Alongside her videos, Nicholson’s podcasts make you feel like you are sitting in a coffee shop with your best friends as they cover every aspect of what it means to be a young woman in 2020. As well as being uploaded on all streaming services, you can also find video versions of the podcast on her second channel, Koze.

The Gurls Talk Podcast

Hosted by model and activist Adwoa Aboah, The Gurls Talk Podcast does not hold back from tackling difficult subjects. Each month, the episodes are centred around different themes such as addiction, grief, sex and love. The episodes are split into different segments in which guests discuss these topics candidly and honestly. At the end of each episode a submission from a Gurls Talk community member, about the theme, is read, allowing another personal take on the subject up for discussion.

Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations

Oprah Winfrey is without a doubt one of the most successful women in media, with years of life experiences to share. SuperSoul Conversations features archive interviews and talks from 25 years of The Oprah Show, as well as current interviews with prominent women, such as, Lady Gaga. A standout episode for me is ‘Best Lifesaving Lessons’, which highlights the importance of using your intuition in dangerous situations. As well as this, the female listeners are provided with a protection agent’s top advice on staying safe.

Pretty Big Deal with Ashley Graham

Ashley Graham is one of the most well-known models in the world. She has ventured into the podcast world with her series: Pretty Big Deal. It features conversations with people she has met who she deems a pretty big deal, for example model Rosie Huntington-Whitely, singer Demi Lovato and writer Cleo Wade. In each episode guests share stories of both their successes and their failures, giving insight into their journey to becoming who they are. If you prefer visuals, the videos are also posted on Ashley’s YouTube channel.

So, whether you’re taking a quick break from studying, are working out, or are simply in need of something to help you wind down in the evening, there will surely be a podcast for you. These are some of my favourites, created by and featuring women we can all look to for inspiration. Enjoy!
