I don’t know about you but I have been one grumpy lady the past few weeks. I could blame it on a number of things; the seasons changing, my hormones, upcoming essays, or even someone looking at me the wrong way. All I know is that I am the mayor of Grumpytown and no one should mess with me! To be honest, my grumpiness is probably unrelated to the things mentioned above; I think it’s just that time of year where everyone’s patience is wearing thin.

I’ve been set off by my housemates not replacing the empty toilet paper roll in the bathroom and having to wipe with the cardboard remains, someone putting their food on my shelf in the fridge, and having all the hot water used up resulting in taking a surprise cold shower. In September, when I come back to school from the summer, I have endless patience for these kinds of things. I think about how much I’ve missed Kingston, living away from home, and how much I missed my housemates (annoying quirks included).

I’m sure that like me, your patience is probably wearing thin too. Between assignments racking up and the existential dread that might be looming over you regarding WTF you are going to do once you graduate, it can be a lot. Not to mention the matter of finding a summer job or deciding what to wear on a daily basis. The question of over or under dressing for the weather and arriving to class either dripping in sweat or absolutely frozen can truly be a game changer. Needless to say, there is a lot to be annoyed about this time of year.

For everything that triggers your grumpiness, try to think of something to combat it. Maybe try putting a positive spin or affirmation on the situation. For example, when I find myself out of toilet paper and nothing to wipe with due to my housemates’ annoying quirks, I just look at the empty toilet paper roll, shake my head, and laugh. As annoying as it is, you have to admit it’s a little funny because you’ve definitely put your housemates in this exact situation. My point is that it’s a tough time of the year and everyone is on edge; try to have some patience with everyone in your life, whether it be your housemates, family, or significant other.

Here are some reminders I’ve been using to put a positive spin on the minor annoyances in my life:

“S**t! There’s no toilet paper!”

As much as this is annoying to deal with, I’m going to miss my housemates over the summer. Tell them to replace the damn toilet paper but also tell them how much you love them and how much you’ll miss them over the summer.

“Someone put their food on my shelf in the fridge and now I have no space!”

Once again, remember you’ll miss them when they’re gone!

“Damn it! Another cold shower again!”

You’ll probably shower faster because it’s not as warm, which 1. saves time and 2. is better for the environment!

“I’m DROWNING in assignments!”

You’ve made it this far! Only one more month of classes! You got this!

“WTF am I going to do when I graduate?!?”

You’re young! You have time to figure it out! Everything will work out, as it should!

“I don’t know how to dress for this weather! I’m either too hot or too cold!”

Well, the days of being seasonally confused clothing wise are coming to a close my friend! Warm weather is on the way!

This list of minor annoyances could go on and on; however I encourage you to look on the bright side to any situation if you can. I would even encourage you to make a mental note similar to this one because sometimes you just have to feel all your feelings before you can a positive spin on things. It’s the end of the year; don’t get too worked up over stuff like this. Laugh it off, tell your friends you love them, and get the heck out of Grumpytown!
