Five Reasons to Love Netflix’s I Am Not Okay With This

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

If you are self-isolating and think you have already completed Netflix, think again. Netflix has brought us a brand-new show about a teenage girl, Sydney, who is dealing with typical teenager things; school, sexuality, parties… and telekinesis.

If you really need any more persuasion to start watching, here are the five things that I loved the most about the show.

A fuzzy screen in the back ground might say \"netflix\" but the image\'s selective focus is on a mug of some sort.

The Fashion

The creators of I Am Not Okay with This left the time period of the show very ambiguous, but this did not prevent me from loving everything about this mysterious time frame. The fashion is definitely 80s inspired and nothing beats Stanley’s looks.

Sydney is SO Relatable

We may not all have telekinesis powers, but we all have rage. And honestly? It’s very satisfying to see a physical representation of Sydney’s frustrations.

It is totally binge-worthy

Each of the seven episodes are only 20 minutes long so this show will not take up the entirety of the time you have to spend in time.

It Teaches Us Important Messages

I don’t hide the fact that I love teen shows that address sexuality, and this show definitely does it well. Sydney never actually explicitly states her sexuality, she has bigger fish to fry. But we see her experiment with the dorky yet adorable Stanley whilst crushing on her best girlfriend Dina. I think this is realistic, it takes a long time to understand your sexuality, so why would we expect Sydney to work hers out in the mere two hours we spend with her?

It has absolutely NOTHING to do with Covid-19

Give yourself a break from the endless news cycles – it’s refreshing!

TV shows and movies are one of the best distractions out there, and if you are lucky enough to have them at your disposal – use them. Whether you have a Netflix subscription, a TV license or a DVD player, make sure you take advantage of this during this difficult period. We all need an escape, now more than ever. Even if telekinetic teens are not your thing, please give yourself an hour (or 10) a day to escape to whatever scripted universe you like.
